Kraken

Colossal magical beasts bound to the oceans and created by the god Eadro, Krakens were once the cornerstone of the ocean's ecosystem. They were apex predators which acted in the interest of the oceans. They punished those who did damage to its ecosystems and still many new Krakens today take the chance to do so. The oldest and most powerful Kraken is known as Leviathan. They once dominated the oceans before being mostly destroyed by the Aboleths and their mentally dominated followers.   Many existing Krakens can be found now within the Triton Protectorates, who compete for the patronage of these colossal creatures. The most powerful Protectorates may call upon the aid of two or even three Krakens.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Krakens do not possess a uniform body plan and are known to use magic to change their appearances over time. Most, however, appear as a much larger version of a squid with a slightly armoured body.

Genetics and Reproduction

New Krakens are born every few decades and take several decades to grow into fully mature creatures. Krakens reproduce sexually and lay eggs.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Krakens rarely live together but when they do they form a democratic unit with deference towards the oldest individual in the unit. The closest thing Krakens have to a universal leader is Leviathan.

Civilization and Culture

History

Unlike Dragons, who saw fit to construct their own civilization, Krakens never followed in the footsteps of their land-air counterparts. Instead, they saw fit to preside over the civilizations of the ocean and its ecosystem. They served as protectors of the environment punishing those who harmed it and preventing wars between different groups. In the end, they were the fabric which held much of Merfolk society together.

Common Myths and Legends

Three Krakens once presided over the City of Meralia, together they were rumoured to be as powerful as the even then unmatched Leviathan. They were treated as gods by the Merfolk of the city and often made demonstrations of their power. However, these three were all killed by the Aboleths and their followers.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Krakens are looked at with a mixture of reverence and fear by the species who live beneath the waves. Reverence for their power gifted by the god Eadro and fear for their ability to destroy at a whim. The Triton, in particular, see Krakens as great allies with Protectorates competing to appease them and gain their aid should they need it.   Land dwellers almost invariably view Krakens with fear as the creatures are often spiteful and punish overly zealous sailors with impunity. However, Krakens are not without mercy and many a ship cast off course in a storm has been saved by Kraken magic.   Krakens despise Aboleths with a burning hatred for the damage they have forever inflicted upon their species. A Kraken, if capable, will attack an Aboleth on sight.
