Did you know that Sharmila Tagore's mother Ira Baruah was an Assamese and her father Gitindernath Tagore was a Bengali. Her father was acting as the Deputy General Manager of the Elgin Mills owner the East India Company.
Sharmila Tagore looked gorgeous in the roles of a typical Indian woman decked up in beautiful sarees and gajras. But she broke that image with her movie An Evening in Paris where she wore a bikini and ruffled a few headlines.
Sharmila’s father was the grandson of Rabindranath Tagore’s first cousin’s grandson. Her maternal grandmother was the granddaughter of Rabindranath’s brother.
She is also distantly related to Devika Rani and Abanindarnath Tagore, the pride of India and one of the best painters that the country has seen.
When she got married to Nawab of Pataudi and the ex-captain of Indian cricket team, Tiger Pataudi, she had to convert to his religion, that is Islam and she had to change in her name, Begum Ayesha Sultana.
Sharmila has openly spoken about her love for dance in most of her interviews. Acting never enticed her and she wanted to quit but it was dancing that kept her excitement on.
Sharmila Tagore also did 10 Bengali film, one Marathi, one Malayalam and one English film.
