Patrick De Spiegelaere (1961-2007)
Patrick De SPIEGELAERE (Ghent, 15 August 1961 - Bruges, 2 March 2007) was a Flemish photographer. De Spiegelaere studied photography, film and graphics at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He then worked as a press photographer for the newspaper 'De Morgen' for both national and international reports. After his dismissal in 1993, he worked freelance for all kinds of magazines and newspapers, including Knack, FET and De Standaard Magazine. He was also a regular photographer for several theater companies. He was also active in the music world, as a house photographer for the Belgian folk and world music group Oblolow and for Raymond van het Groenewoud. He was also involved in annual projects such as art books, book and CD covers, calendars and commissions from the Stichting voor Kunstpromotie and others. Vredeseilanden called on him every year for campaign photos taken in countries from South America over Africa to Asia. In 1995 he started an annual trip that took him through all European capitals. What had started as an escape from the infernal rhythm of his work, led in 2006 to an exhibition entitled STREET of photos taken in Athens, Rome, Prague, Amsterdam, Paris, Lisbon and London. In March 2007 Patrick passed away. De Spiegelaere unexpectedly suffered from a brain haemorrhage at the age of 45.
