1938 Peugeot 402 Darl’Mat Legere “Special Sport” Roadster… This stunning pre-war French sports car takes its name from Parisian Peugeot dealer Emile Darl’Mat…who provided his wealthy clients with customized cars from Peugeot derived models during the 1920-30s. Darl’Mat was infatuated with racing, and took notice when the company introduced the 402 Legere in late 1937. This narrow bodied roadster was a lighter version of the 402 with a wider box-frame chassis. He commissioned his friend Georges Paulin to sketch a new aerodynamic shape…a design suitable for the track and street. Paulin brilliantly melded astonishing beauty plus streamlining…with influences of haute couture and Art Deco to create this iconic model. Whimsical flourishes of circular medallions made of polished aluminum waterfall down the sides of the long bonnet and serve as intake vents. Another acquaintance of Darl’Mat…Parisian coachbuilder Marcel Pourtout was brought into the project and fashioned the vehicles elaborate body. Competing against Delahaye and Talbot at the 1938 LeMans…the 402 Darl’Mat Roadster won the 2.0 liter class, and continued to place at many other tracks. The stock trim dual-carb four produced more than 90hp…translating to about 120mph. It is estimated that 64 units were built in roadster, cabriolet, and coupe configurations…reportedly less than 30 remain. The Roadsters high speed reliability and balance, masterful handling, light weight (2249lbs) and outrageously alluring visual esthetics make this car highly collectible. Each of the remaining vehicles vary in detail regarding engines and interiors. This elegant design is firmly positioned in the chapters of French automotive history, and it’s impeccable road demeanor makes it an absolute joy to drive or race. A few of these legendary automobiles have topped $1million in recent years.

Von! Fabulous shape and the alligator interiors are spectacular, the result of remarkable collaborations among personalities of the French automotive history, although I have never been a fan of Peugeot/Renault models. Elegant design, light weight and eye-catching aesthetics make this car a magnet for enthusiasts. This is the similarity with you: you've always been a magnet for automobile experts Have a wonderful day one-of-a-kind friend and be blessed. Hi Von, thanks for sharing this one, I have always appreciated Peugeots in all of their model ranges, in particular beauties such as the 402. Even the 402 in 4 door sedan configuration is a beautiful machine... 👍😎

Great post, Von! Sort of a fairy tale car... here's another angle of a Darl' Mat I snapped at Pebble last year. Love how the number plate is not just an afterthought!
