Another strange turn of events in Sonyland. At E3, they showed off Gran Turismo HD, a sort of stopgap Gran Turismo game -- not quite a full sequel, but an updated version of GT4 with 1080p graphics. And they took their sweet time at that press conference, too; it was long about the third race demo that I realized my ass had fallen asleep. People joke about "massive damage," but that Genji presentation was a reprieve.

Uh, anyway. So this game was going to be released, but now it's not. Cancelled, is the word we use. But it'll live on in some form: Sony will release it as a one-course, ten-car "concept demo", through the PlayStation Store. For free! It'll hit Japan on December 24th. No US release date announcement yet. Meanwhile, developer Polyphony Digital will work on Gran Turismo 5, which the announcement calls an "Online Car Life Simulator."

The announcements (in Japanese) are here and here.
