Tufted to clump-forming to 25cm high (in the wild sometimes to 40cm). Leaves obovate, 4-8cm long, pinnatifidly cut into a few broad lobes, silvery silky-hairy. Flowerheads 1.2-1.8cm across, the bracts with a wide brown margin, in loose clusters of six to twenty-five, summer. Alps to Balkan peninsula amongst mountain rocks. A.c. var. argentea has extra silvery leaves. A.c. var. integrifolia has unlobed leaves and larger ray florets.
