Botanical Description

but variable from low spreading to erect, up to 40cm tall by 60-100cm across. Leaves to 5cm or more across, deeply divided into narrow, linear, acute lobes and segments. Flowers usually single, standing clear of the leaves, about 3cm across, typically strong magenta, but varying through pale flesh-pink (the flatly prostrate var. lancastrense) to clear white, the petals notched and variably striated, stigmas red, anthers bluish. Several cultivars are known. Most of Europe, Caucasus, northern Turkey in open rocky and sandy places and in scrub.
