perennial 30-60cm across. Leaves ovate to broadly so, 1-2.5cm long with pellucid dots, comparatively long-stalked (5-10mm). Flowers yellow, to 1.5cm across, on stalks to 1cm long, solitary from the leaf axils, early to mid summer. Japan, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, lowland and mountains, in thickets and open sites. L. deltoides from the Himalaya is smaller but, has some ascending stems and the whole plant is hairy. L. japonica 'Minutissima' is an intriguing miniature form.
