Leaves heart-shaped, hairy underneath, 3-8cm long, 2.5-5cm wide, on stalks to 5cm long. Flowering stems 5-20cm tall, with usually two leaves, short-stalked or occasionally the upper stalkless. Flowers 3-5mm across, in racemes l-5cm long, late spring to early summer. Fruits to 6mm, green turning red. Western Europe to Japan, in woodland. Var. yakushimense an attractive micro form from S. Japan.
