Botanical Description

A low spreading subshrub 10-20cm high. Leaves cordate, 10-15mm long, bracts of similar size becoming deep purple at flowering time. Flowers deep pink, very conspicuous, with tubes up to 4cm long in a terminal whorl of up to six, mid to late summer or early autumn. Amanus Mountains of southern Turkey on rocky limestone slopes at 1500-2300m. Introduced by Dr Peter Davis and later by John Watson and others, this is probably the finest species. The later introductions have proved absolutely hardy in well drained soil in southern counties.
