Similar to P. polyneura, differing by the leaf-blades >1.5 x as long as wide with shallower, more irregular lobing, and a shorter calyx, to 7 mm. Leaves ovate to oblong, heart-shaped at the base, 5-15cm long or more by 1.5-6cm wide, crenately lobed and toothed, hairy, half the length of the stalk. Flowers with bifid petal lobes, reddish-violet, 2cm across, two to fifteen in tight umbels on stems 10-15cm high. Urals eastwards to northen China, Gansu and Korea, a range of nearly 5000 km. Cliffs and moist rocky slopes in boreal woodland. Not difficult in a cool place in a 'woodsy' soil, but not usually long-lived and rarely seen in cultivation.
