Botanical Description

A hybrid between S. marginata and S. sancta. There are several cultivars which form rapidly spreading firm hummocks of pale to dark green rosettes l-2cm in diameter bearing inflorescences of usually pale yellow flowers. They are all of easy growth and abundant floriferousness and have considerable garden value even flourishing in normal border conditions.

The following are the best known: 'Gregor Mendel'; this is the original S, X apiculata with its newly bestowed cultivar name. Leaves linear, glossy, pale green and apiculate. Flowering stems 5-8cm tall bearing six to twelve primrose-yellow flowers, petals 7-9mm long. Commences to flower very early in the year and remains in flower for several weeks. 'Alba'; identical to 'Gregor Mendel' except for the colour of its flowers which are white. 'Albert Einstein'; darker green foliage, taller inflorescence and reddish flowering stems. 'Primrose Bee'; rather like 'Gregor Mendel' but having somewhat flatter rosettes, more obtuse leaves and slightly larger flowers. 'Pseudopungens', 'Pungens' and 'Spartakus' are cultivar names also referable to this cross.
