Forms firm yellowish-green to golden-brown hummocks. Similar in morphology to S. brockiei except for the single flowers. South Island of New Zealand at similar elevations and in similar situations to S. brockiei, except that it tends to be found in drier habitats. Needs poorish soil and a sunny site to form first-rate tight hummocks. Perhaps the easiest true "bun" plant to grow.
