Tufted and rhizomatous with ascending to erect stems 20-40cm long. Leaves broadly ovate to triangular-ovate, bluntly toothed and pubescent, 5-20mm long. Flowers 1.8-2.2cm long, pale purple, in terminal spikes, early summer. China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Indochina, on sunny hillsides. S.i. var. parvifolia, syn. S.i. var. japonica, has 5-20cm long decumbent stems and leaves up to 1cm long. Japan only. A pure white clone is known.
