to 40cm or more across, stems usually prostrate to decumbent, sometimes ascending. Leaves ovate to narrowly oblong, l-3cm long, densely pubescent, crenate-serrate to almost entire, deep green. Flowers to 1cm or more in diameter, rich blue through to pink, in dense racemes early to late summer. Much of Europe, a variable species in flower colour and overall size, being represented in gardens by selected clones, all of which are good beginners' plants, e.g. 'Alba' (white), 'Rosea' (pink), 'Blue Sheen' (wisteria blue), 'Mrs Holt' (soft pink), 'Royal Blue' (deep blue), 'Spode Blue' (light blue), 'Silver Queen' and 'Kapitan' (silvery blue) and 'Nana' (dwarf and compact with good blue flowers).
