If you consider yourself to be a Disney Adult, then there’s a good chance you grew up watching Mary Poppins.
It’s hard not to love the magical, practically perfect nanny and all her quirks! After all, the movie has inspired lots of the details in the UK Pavilion in EPCOT as well as the Grand Floridian Resort. As much as we all love the movie, it’s safe to say that the movie includes a lot of outdated ideals and language. Because of this, the film has been updated in a huge way.
The age recommendation for Mary Poppins has been raised due to discriminatory language.
BBC shared that the 1964 film has been changed from a U (Universal) rating to a PG rating due to language that has been deemed insensitive, and might not be ideal for children.
The insensitive language is used in the movie to describe a “soot-faced chimney sweeper,” but is actually a derogatory term used by white Europeans to describe nomadic peoples of in Southern Africa.
The British Board of Film classification stated, “While Mary Poppins has a historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned, and ultimately exceeds our guidelines for acceptable language at U. We therefore classified the film PG for discriminatory language.”
