The announcement by French Minister of Culture, Aurélie Filippetti that Huang Yong Ping will be the next artist to create a major installation in the Grand Palais for Monumenta was accompanied by another announcement: that the next date will be 2016, not 2015, with the annual event now to become biennial, Le Monde reports.
This comes after the recent Monumenta 2014 installation, by Ilia and Emilia Kabakov, was deferred from 2013 for budgetary reasons, although staging Monumenta in years when the Lyon Biennial is not on, rather than finances, have been given as the main reason for the change.
Born in 1954 in Xiamen, in the south of China, Huang Yong Ping was a prominent member of the Chinese avant-garde in the 1980s before moving to Paris. He represented France with Jean-Pierre Bertrand at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999.
Previous Monumenta artists include Daniel Buren (2012), Anish Kapoor (2011), Christian Boltanski (2010), Richard Serra (2008) and Anselm Kiefer (2007). There was no Monumenta in 2009.
