Chinese quince is a fantastic species for bonsai culture. It develops multicolor, exfoliating bark, muscular trunks, has pink flowers, beautiful fruit, and is vigorous.

There are two trees in one here. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the tree has grown some good choices to cut back to for form a new leader and primary branches. You can also retain and work with the trunk segment that I wired and bent. Both are good, and very different choices.

Remove stubs in summer when the plant is growing vigorously and able to close wounds.

Chinese quince has a strong habit of growing roots all around the covered parts of trunk base and nebari, so the empty area will fill in with roots in a season or two. There is callus in the area where there are no roots, so you will most likely get roots there. Plant it a bit low to increase your chances of getting roots.

I don't recommend doing any more root pruning this season other than cleaning up any rough cuts. Also, minimize top work until the plant is growing vigorously.
