All Gold Japanese Forest Grass

Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold'

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Ornamental Grass
Plant Family: Poaceae
Plant Description: All Gold is the perfect ornamental grass for shady areas in the landscape. It will brighten up your garden with an abundance of bright yellow, long, slender leaves. The foliage will turn more chartreuse when in full shade. Summer brings subtly beautiful and delicate yellow-green blooms, but they tend to be out shown by the foliage. The overall habit is more upright, but it will gently descend overtime like other Hakonehloa grasses.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Ornamental Grass - Small
Plant Care: Ornamental Grass - Small (showy non-turf grasses that go dormant in winter, under 3' tall): Gather dried seed head stalks in one hand and use hand pruners to cut and remove 2/3 of the total grass height. For warm season grasses (more common), this is best done in late winter to early spring. For cool season grasses apply the same maintenance practices in the late fall, once the plant is dormant.

Garden Staff Tips & Insights:

It prefers moist, rich soils and may have a harder time in dry, clay soils. We lost several grown in the garden, but some have survived and add beautiful color in our shadier areas.
