White-topped Star Sedge occurs primarily along the Southeastern U.S. coast into Texas. It is found in moist, loamy, soils as well as wet pinelands, savannahs, and marshy areas. Designated a facultative wetland species (FACW), it’s appropriate for many green infrastructure projects, including stormwater wetlands and bioretention features. It’s an attractive sedge known for its showy, white bracts that resemble stars. This North American native is a lovely choice for moist spots in the landscape or the edges of ponds and water features. It spreads by rhizomes and forms thick patches in wet, boggy sites. Formerly called Dichromena latifolia, botanists have moved it to Rhynchospora, a genus of approximately 250-300 species. We have confirmed this is R. colorata rather than R. latifolia. With only minute differences in the two, for most of us they are interchangeable.
