What is Plants Nouveau and what do we do ?

12

Plants Nouveau is a new plant introduction and marketing company. We help plant breeders bring their plants to market by helping them through the introduction process. Plants Nouveau is run by two hip and trendy, plant loving women who totally adore plants and garden a lot. We’re not talking about “weekend warriors”, we’re talking about intense gardens and whenever they can be outside, away from their desks, their hands are quite dirty. Co-owners Angela Treadwell-Palmer and Linda Guy work directly with the plant breeders to select plants that are perfect for the consumers in their market. Every breeder and grower they work with is treated like family and that’s how they run their business. It’s all personal and the personal relationships are what have built Plants Nouveau to the well-respected company it is today.

What is new plant introduction ?

At Plants Nouveau, we think of ourselves as architects for better gardens, better minds and a better world. We introduce fantastic NEW plants from around the world that help people get out and play in their gardens. Our plants are bred to make gardening more colorful, less complicated and much more enjoyable. Plants Nouveau's creative and intellectual resources give world-wide recognition to great new plants that solve the needs of today’s consumer. Each new plant is evaluated in multiple, trusted sites to ensure success. Once deemed worthy, our plants are grown by premier growers around the globe.

So, what does that mean ? How does it all work ? We find the plants — or the plants find us We bring the plants to our growers We do extensive trials and evaluations all over North American and beyond We patent the plant to protect the inventor — just like any other invention We use memorable, meaningful names to enhance marketing efforts We develop creative marketing materials that speak to both growers and gardeners. We engage consumers to create demand We talk about the plants — A LOT — online & everywhere we go.

Why don't we sell plants ?

It’s our job to select and market the new plants to the growers. We leave the selling to those who do it best. We license talented, capable growers who grow our plants and then sell them to consumers both online & in garden centers around the world. We will do our best to help you find a source for our plants. Our goal is for everyone to have access and every gardener to benefit from the hard work we do to select plants that are just right for today’s consumers. Think you have the next hot new plant? Call us… Cheers,

Angela & Linda Our Introduction Partners We work with the following plant introduction and breeding companies to ensure our plants (and theirs) are marketed to their greatest potential.

COLOCASIA ‘BLACK RIPPLE’ PP 26151 This is one hard working, sexy elephant ear. The first time we saw Black Ripple (formerly known as ‘Puckered Up’) in the trial fields, we were blown away by the number of stems and leaves, the sheen and the amazingly puckered foliage. This is one of the cutest, most attractive colocasias released in a long time. The light plays off of each pucker to make the foliage look a lot like a shiny turtle shell. The habit is rather compact, with many stems, so this one will make a lovely presentation in any retail setting in a one, two or three gallon pot. Size: 3–4' tall by 3–4'wide

COLOCASIA

‘PAINTED BLACK GECKO’ PPAF

‘RED-EYED GECKO’

With leaves being the most important ornamental trait of colocasias, the dark-black leaves of Painted Black Gecko are certain to grab your attention! 3–4’ clumps catch and reflect the light with a shimmering iridescence, offering a unique look between the black tops and the undersides of the leaves, which vary from maroon to gray in color. A moderate grower, Painted Black Gecko is easy to find a spot for, and can be used anywhere you would plant caladiums for that contrasting color only elephant ears can offer.

Plant a Gecko in your garden or in a pot for instant color and a superior tropical effect. What do Geckos and Elephant Ears have in common? They both like warm weather, and they are uniquely colored. They can also range in size from very small, to quite large. This series has it all. Red-Eyed Gecko is the third to be introduced into this series with its chartreuse foliage and deep red eye — like the eye of a Gecko. This is one unusually bright and sunny selection with strong lime green stems. Keep this one out of hot afternoon sun and you will have a bright, happy beauty all summer long.

One of the largest plants in the Gigante Series, this new behemoth is arguably the most unique as well. Strong, purple stems form the foundation for large, green, heart-shaped leaves, which are also complimented by purple veins. Once mature, plants regularly produce tall, purple flowers with white spaths, resembling lovely, ornate candles ablaze. A one-of-a-kind plant, this is the first Colocasia we’ve seen with ornamental flowers!

NEW

COLOCASIA

‘DRAGON HEART GIGANTE’ PPAF For years, Brian Williams, the breeder of the Gigante series dreamed of a black-leaved Colocasia gigantea. A plant that could grow 7–8' tall in a single season, a plant with ears as big as elephants; black ears. With great perseverance he worked toward making his dream come true. It’s been said that within every dreamer, beats the heart of a dragon. From this, we bring you ‘Dragon Heart’. Size: 7–8' tall by 5–8'wide

COLOCASIA ‘IMPERIAL GIGANTE’ PP 26152 Are you an impatient grower or gardener? This is the series for you. Gigante is Spanish for giants, and boy are they huge. These new tropical elephant ears will grow up to 8 feet tall in one growing season and the leaves on these plants can reach 2–3 feet long. Our incredibly bold, colorful selections are perfectly happy in the ground or in large containers. Make a tropical oasis anywhere you need with the Gigantes. Imperial Gigante shows off massive black leaves each one particularly ornate, accented by light green veins and stems. Robust in nature, these 3–4' long leaves are held horizontally like giant fan blades. Size: 5–8' tall by 5–8'wide

COLOCASIA ‘BIKINI-TINI’

COLOCASIA ‘MADIERA’

Bikini-tini stands above the others, literally, growing 5 to 7 feet tall, the upward-facing bluish-gray leaves form cups that show off the dark purple petioles and veins. It’s a tetraploid, so it is also strong-stemmed and thick-leaved. For a fun game when it rains, watch the cups of Bikini-tini fill with water, and then tip to pour it out! Children will love this. Part of the Tropi-cool Series, bikinitini has proven perennial, even where the soil freezes. They will please gardeners everywhere with their bold color and easy to handle sizes.

Midway in size between a caladium and an elephant ear, Madeira grows only 2 to 3 feet tall, adding depth and drama to garden compositions. It is an ideal selection for the mid border or as a foliar element in large containers, where it contrasts and complements brightly colored foliage and flowers. Another great character trait of this new selection is that unlike other black-leaved forms, Madeira will not spread and take over your garden.

Size: 5–6' tall by 30–36" wide

COLOCASIA ‘SANGRIA’ A tropical look is easier to attain in northern climes because these tubers overwinter in gardens as cold as zone 6. Part of the Tropi-Cool Series, Sangria has proven perennial, even where the soil freezes. This new selection makes a lovely focal point, sporting vibrant pinkish red petioles, like rhubarb. A closer look reveals the bluish green tint of the leaves and the purple veins that branch throughout the blade.

BRUNNERA MACROPHYLLA

‘SEA HEART’ GARDEN CANDY® PP 24684 Sea Heart holds up much better to the heat and humidity and it flowers about one to two weeks early than other selections with a lovely two-toned bloom. If you’ve always wanted a brunnera in your garden, this brunnera is for you — even if you live somewhere where the summers are hot and humid. It holds up well and keeps going well into fall until a good hard frost takes it out. We’ve also noticed that other brunnera are affected by foliar, nematodes and ‘SeaHeart’ and ‘Silver Heart’ are NOT.

BRUNNERA MACROPHYLLA

‘SILVER HEART’ GARDEN CANDY® PP 24685 We planted this new selection side-by-side with ‘Looking Glass’ and noticed a huge difference in foliage toughness. The leaves are thicker and more pubescent (or hairier) and they hold up much better in extreme heat and humidity. The blooms are still deep cobalt blue and the foliage is as silver as a baracuda’s skin. Try this plant in your shade garden. In the shade and on warm summer evenings, each leaf looks like a little moon, lighting up the garden. The mature leaves are as big as your head! We’ve noticed that other Brunnera are affected by foliar, nematodes and ‘SeaHeart’ and ‘Silver Heart’ are NOT. Same Specifications:

ECHINACEA ‘MINI BELLE’ PPAF

ECHINACEA ‘PINK BONBON’ PPAF

Mini Bell is a miniature NEW version of ‘Southern Belle’. With its bright fuchsia blooms and strong stems, yet in a smaller version for smaller garden spaces, Mini Bell is the plant for you. Like its sister, Mini Belle has EchinaSize: 18–24" tall by 18–24" wide cea tennesseensis in her blood, so she should be super long-lived in any garden setting. Dead head her and she will rebloom the entire summer.

Like deep pink chocolate balls filled with tasty ice cream, this new perfectly pink selection has truly double blooms with no ray petals. Delicious pink pompoms are formed on the end of each strong stem and complement the deep green foliage well. Your garden will feel decadent with Pink Bonbon in its borders.

ECHINACEA ‘PINK DOUBLE DELIGHT’ PP 18803

ECHINACEA ‘PINK SORBET’ PP 18817

Pink Double Delight was the first garden worthy double pink coneflower by which all others have been compared. This double pink beauty is the original and still has more all-summer blooms than any other on the market. It is consistently, truly double and it has a wonderful, compact habit with multiple blooms per stem.

NEW

Size: 12–15" tall by 18–24" wide

Echinacea ‘Pink Sorbet’ took top awards at the ISU (International Stauden Union) trials and Plantarium in The Netherlands. It is a gem of a plant. Strong, sturdy stems hold up large, fully double bubble-gum pink blooms. This is the perfect plant for shipping on racks. Pink Sorbet has super stiff stems that hold up its fully double, pompom blooms and never flop — even after a heavy rainstorm.

Size: 18–24" tall by 24–30" wide

ECHINACEA ‘RASPBERRY TRUFFLE’ PP 22612

ECHINACEA ‘SOUTHERN BELLE’ PP 23493

This beautiful selection is short and stout, making it the perfect companion for summer perennials. The soft, yet saturated salmoney-pink bloom color is long lasting and fades to a coral pink as it ages. The ray flowers are deep salmon in color, and the cone or center of the bloom begins chocolate brown and unfurls to reveal a very double, button top in the same color as the ray petals as it matures. The name sure fits because when the cone flowers are developing, the chocolate center looks like a truffle placed in the middle of the bloom.

Southern Belle has flat ray petals that stick out from the fully double, deep magenta colored cone like a formal pink pettiskirt. The breeder infused Echinacea tennesseensis into the mix giving this selection extreme vigor, amazing bloom power and a super long life. The color saturation on each bloom of Southern Belle is quite unbelievable. A true magenta in every sense of the word. Crayola would be proud.

HELLEBORUS SEED STRAINS WINTER MAGIC™ Through innovation with the University of Ghent and a strong commitment to quality, and ease of growing, many new varieties have been bred and will be sold worldwide. The goal at Het Wilgenbroek is to offer a true seed strain by color and type of their H. orientalis selections. Thierry van Paemal and his staff have been working for ten years to select seedlings and then group them into type and color ranges. Each year they rogue out plants that do not fit the selected type and collect seed from plants that do fit, strengthening their seed strain lines. After ten years of selecting and collecting seed, we are happy to be finally offering the Winter Magic™ strain of hand selected Helleborous orientalis to growers all over the world. Not only are these strains true to their descriptions, but they germinate and fill a 72 cell liner in less than one year, making production much shorter and sales much cheaper than other seed strains on the market.

HELLEBORUS XNIGERCOR ‘SNOW LOVE’ WINTER MAGIC™ PP 19559

Candy Love bursts into bloom with soft, pastel shades of yellow and pink. HEUCHERA ‘STAINLESS STEEL’ GARDEN CANDY® PP 23349

Dark Chocolate has relatively large flowers that begin as deep pink buds and mature to a soft, pale pink bloom with fringed edges. Blooms appear in late spring in long, narrow panicles reaching to a height of 18–24 inches and dangle gracefully. The flower stems are dark purple and contrast very well with the soft pink blooms. This has been a tough and enduring plant, surviving dry and humid summers with no problems. Deep chocolate brown leaves with a slightly luminous, silver overlay make a stunning combination.

Stainless Steel is nearly evergreen in the garden and the new foliage that emerges each April is nothing less than stunning. When planted in more sun, the leaves get a mauve glow, but in part or full shade, they truly are, well, stainless steel. The undersides of the leaves are celery green and the veins are a bright, pinkish-maroon. The overlay of pure silver is breathtaking, especially in morning sun. This plant is heat and humidity tough and it can withstand the coldest winters. Strong purple stems hold 18" cut flower quality bloom stalks filled with sturdy, creamy white bells.

PHLOX PANICULATA ‘DITOMDRE’ CORAL CRÈME DROP PP 20907

Bright, candy pink flowers with crisp white markings unfurl into six-inch long cone-shaped blossoms, covering the plant from mid to late summer, casting a sweet perfume into the air for all who pass by. Bubblegum Pink is a super disease resistant selection from a breeding program in the Netherlands. Plant this beauty in the middle of a mixed border, along the foundation of your house, or mass it in a commercial setting and it will not disappoint. Hummingbirds and hummingbird moths will visit it daily for its sweet nectar.

One of the most beautiful mid-summer flowers, Coral Crème Drop is adorned with brightly colored, deep salmon blooms. Each tiny flower (or floret) that makes up the blossom cone has a bright, fuchsia pink ring around the center — the center where hummingbirds and hummingbird moths come to drink their nectar. It’s as if nature put a bull’s eye right there for them to see the spot. Mix this phlox into your border or foundation plantings and accent it with blue and white flowering plants for a glorious color combination. This super disease resistant selection is mildew free in gardens all over the US and comes to us from breeding in The Netherlands.

PHLOX PANICULATA ‘DITOMFAV’ COTTON CANDY PP 21369

PHLOX PANICULATA ‘DITOMSUR’ GRAPE LOLLIPOP PP 21109

Soft pink flowers with white brushstroke accents make for a lovely pastel addition to any garden. Each tiny flower (or floret) has bright white markings and an orange halo around the center of the flower, to guide the pollinators to the pot of nectar waiting for them. Hummingbirds and hummingbird moths will delight and visit these beauties daily, as their sweet candy-like fragrance fills the summer air. Cotton Candy mixes well with purple, darker pinks and even yellows in mixed plantings and foundations, and will bloom from mid to late summer. This disease resistant selection comes to us form breeding in the Netherlands.

A favorite color in the summer garden, Grape Lollipop adds a muchneeded pop of deep, saturated purple to the palette. Each tiny flower (or floret) is accented by white brushstrokes — or landing marks — and a bright orange halo in the center, helping much needed pollinators find their way to the juicy nectar. Hummingbirds and hummingbird moths will frequent this plant — especially right before the sun goes down. As you finish your gardening chores, and sit down on the patio or porch with a cold beverage to relax, and watch the pollinators visit these phlox. You’ll be amazed at their abundance, speed and beauty. This super disease resistant selection comes to us from breeding in The Netherlands.

Each bloom is unique with its almost fluorescent pinkish-orange color and thin veil of pure white lace. The color reminds us of a bowl of punch. From afar, the petals appear to be solid pinkish-orange, but look closely and you will see the dainty white veil overlay. Light green foliage is the perfect foil for the brightly colored blooms. This unusually colored, perfectly sized, disease resistant phlox will not disappoint.

Soft, cherry blossom pink blooms look like porcelain flowers with their perfectly crisp, squared edges. Dotted with a darker pink eye and displayed against a backdrop of deep green, glossy foliage, this new compact, floriferous phlox will quickly become a star in any garden setting — no matter how hot, dry and humid it is. Bring on the heat and the humidity and even the lack of air circulation. This Asian princess will thrive in any condition.

EVERLASTING® SERIES If you haven’t heard about the Everlasting®Series of Hydrangeas, you are in for a treat. This is a super tough line of Hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf hydrangeas) from our wonderful friends at Kolster BV in The Netherlands. These stellar selections were bred for the cut flower market, so they have amazingly tough stems, strong, deeply colored, thick leathery foliage and the strongest, longest lasting mop head blooms we’ve ever seen. You can seriously bang someone over the head with these and they will not loose one floret. We’ve done it — trust us. Everyone is searching for the next re-blooming hydrangea, but what about a hydrangea that grows three feet tall and blooms on old and new wood, that start one color and take a journey to maturity that may involve three or more color changes along the way? These are better than re-blooming, they’re Everlasting!

MAGICAL® FIRE PP 21302

Panicle hydrangeas bring charm and color to the garden when so many other plants look tired from the summer heat. The flowers evoke a feminine feel with their lacy-white cone-shaped blooms. Magical Fire blooms earlier than other panicle-types, and then the flowers quickly turn burgundy-red while others are still white or turning shades of pink and green. Compact in stature, this new dwarf selection is more adaptable to smaller garden spaces and mixed containers. Once Magical Fire ignites, it continues to be a strong grower throughout the season. Size: 4' tall by 3–4' wide

Soil: Average garden soil

‘BOKRATORCH’

MAGICAL® FLAME PP 21292

Magical Flame lights the torch for these summer-flowering hydrangeas. It is smaller in stature, and more versatile than the average paniculata. Creamy-white panicles are the 1st of their kind to bloom, and quickly turn burgundy-red at the first onset of cool weather. They continue their performance until frost. The flowers evoke a feminine, lacy feel from this delicate new selection. But don’t let “delicate” be confused with its ability to grow. Magical Flame ignites and continues to be a strong grower throughout the season. The blooms remain on fire through the season, the last of its brethren to fade into fall. Size: 3–4' tall by 3–4' wide

Ideal for smaller spaces and urban gardens, the dense, mounding habit of Raspberry Lemonade opens new opportunities for this beloved native shrub. In early spring, fine textured, golden-green foliage brightens the landscape and serves as the perfect backdrop for an abundance of lovely white flowers, clustered together at the tips of every branch. Flowers give way brightly colored coral-red fruits that hold their color for a few weeks — hence the name Raspberry Lemonade™. So, plant a few Raspberry Lemonades close enough to your favorite out door space, grab a cool beverage, sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery! Same Specifications: Size: 4’ tall x 4’’ wide USDA Zones: 3–7 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Soil: Average garden soil, tolerant of a wide range of soil types Moisture: Moist, but well-drained Diseases and Pests: Rust resistant

PHYSOCARPUS OPULIFOLIUS ‘ZLEBIC5’ SWEET CHERRY TEA™

PPAF

It’s easy to see how ninebarks have become one of our most beloved natives. This new free-flowering selection from breeder David Zlasak has more bells and whistles than we can count! Delicate, feathery leaves begin the spring season with a warm, reddish-orange glow before aging to a rich purple. Dark-pink buds open to multiple delicate, pink flowers clustered together at the tips of every branch. As the petals fall, they give way to showy, rosered fruits that hold their color for a few weeks in late-spring. Stunning! But wait… there’s more! The re-blooming trait that Sweet Cherry Tea exhibits is extremely rare in ninebarks, giving us much more to celebrate! In mid-summer the flowering starts again with vigorous shoots terminating in more pink flower clusters. Exceptional branching that follows allows for many side shoots with warm, colored tips to develop and increase plant density — minimizing pruning and contributing to the various shades of Sweet Cherry Tea!

SYRINGA PATULA ‘PINK FLOWER SELECT’ DREAM CLOUD™ PPAF Every once in a while, a plant comes along that we know from the very start is going to be a winner. SYRINGA PATULA ‘JN UPRIGHT SELECT’ VIOLET

UPRISING™ PPAF

Much like political uprisings have a way of shaking up the way we look at things, so too do horticultural ones. There is a new uprising occurring in the world of lilacs. Some varieties are fed up with being lumped into the “common lilac” category of Syringa vulgaris. They don’t want to be thought of as oversized, treelike shrubs that bloom for a few weeks in the spring. How is THAT going to work in our smaller urban gardens? And what about summer fragrance or fall color? Don’t they count? Violet Uprising™ is raising her branches to the sky in a newfound solidarity. We’re making history here people! An upright form of Manchurian lilac, Violet Uprising’s branches are strongly ascending as a very young plant — think goalpost. Lightly fragrant clusters of violet colored flowers form 12” panicles in early summer, measuring 6” across — also reaching upward. Farther into autumn as the night frosts return, leaves develop a rich purple color in keeping with the season. Breeder Michael Yanny in Milwaukee WI says Violet Uprising escaped getting the “whimp gene” so prevalent in many modern lilacs. Unlike other selections, this plant doesn’t melt out in the landscape after a few years due to root rot diseases. In addition, it is resistant to powdery mildew. An exceptional selection for hedging, use Violet Uprising to create a fragrant fence between you and your neighbors. It’s just the right height to share a story or two while you take in the amazing beauty of this incredible new lilac. Prune immediately after flowering has finished to give time for next year’s buds to set. Size: 4–6’ tall x 4–5’ wide
