De stad door de lens van een Brusselse fotograaf

“Ik heb het gevoel dat ik Brussel tamelijk goed ken, maar als Italiaan voel ik me tegelijkertijd een outsider. Als persfotograaf kan je snel door de stad bewegen en veel te zien krijgen, maar ik heb niet altijd de tijd om het vast te leggen. Op en neer, links en rechts, we zijn allemaal slechts passanten. Soms voel ik me aangetrokken tot een straathoek of tot een menselijke flow. Ik sta dan stil, kijk ernaar, en fotografeer hoe dingen en mensen, zoals ikzelf, bewegen. Mijn conclusie is dat we allemaal deel uitmaken van de stad.” NL

Virgilio Martini kwam in 2014 naar Brussel om politieke wetenschappen te studeren, en begon hier te werken aan persoonlijke en documentaire fotografieprojecten. Hij werkt als freelancefotograaf voor de pers en studeert aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. Instagram: virgigilio_martini

Commander Spoon LE JAZZ DANS LA FORCE DE L’ÂGE

Nouvelle sensation de la scène jazz bruxelloise, Commander Spoon rénove l’ADN du genre en juxtaposant le meilleur de quatre instruments. Contrebasse, batterie, guitare et saxophone explorent ici d’autres possibilités. Mais contrairement à ce que la musique laisse entendre, l’union de ces forces vives découle de l’envie de former un quartet dans sa forme la plus traditionnelle. « C’est lié à notre formation. Nous sommes tous passés par le Conservatoire, » indique le batteur Samy Wallens. « Disons que nous utilisons une orchestration classique pour imaginer une musique atypique, » poursuit Pierre Spataro, saxophoniste et cerveau des opérations. Pétrie de soul, d’influences éclectiques et d’échardes électriques arrachées au cœur de la scène hardcore de Washington D.C., la proposition de Commander Spoon s’est esquissée en douze mois sur trois enregistrements. Dernier volet d’un triptyque entamé en avril 2018, le nouveau Facing fait suite aux EP’s Introducing et Declining. « Ces titres font directement référence à l’œuvre de Miles Davis, » révèle Pierre Spataro. « En 1955, le musicien souhaitait changer de label. Mais il était tenu de respecter un FR

contrat qui prévoyait encore quatre albums. Pour se défaire de cet engagement, il a claqué quatre enregistrements en un an : Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' et Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. » Clin d’œil à l’histoire du jazz, l’anecdote souligne aussi la dynamique du groupe. « Avec Commander Spoon, nous travaillons dans l’instant, sans tergiverser. Nous cherchons à créer une musique vivante,

voyant notre nom sur sa compilation, de nombreux observateurs ont directement pris notre proposition au sérieux. » Dans la lignée d’Alfa Mist, BadBadNotGood ou Kokoroko, le quatuor bruxellois est en train d’imposer sa vision du jazz. « Depuis des années, nous sommes à fond dans la musique instrumentale improvisée. It’s very much your time to shine.” The large bald Irish comic Dara Ó Briain loves poking fun at both himself and his fellow man with his combination of sharp wit and buckets of compassion. The presenter of BBC Two’s Mock the Week is best-known here for his appearances on the stand-up comedy show Live at the Apollo. Cinécité baat daar onder de naam Kinograph een tijdelijke bioscoop uit en zet dit weekend de in Elsene geboren en eind maart overleden Varda in the picture met het zwerversdrama Sans toit ni loi, de autobiografische docu Les plages d’Agnès en de feministische nouvelle-vagueklassieker Cléo de 5 à 7. Des beats et un rap incisifs transpercent les murs de la prison de Forest. Et pour cause: le collectif Murmuziek a relevé le défi de développer des projets hip-hop avec certains détenus. Malgré des moyens extrêmement limités (deux micros et un ordinateur) et des réglementations strictes, Murmuziek compte à son actif trois morceaux au phrasé puissant et viscéral, un clip vidéo et un concert programmé cette semaine au BRASS. Les rappeurs en permission seront accompagnés du DJ Viktor French. Van maandag tot maandag mag u feesten alsof het 1999 is: dEUS spoelt tijdens acht uitverkochte shows in de AB terug naar het jaar waarin ze triomfeerden met The ideal crash. EN DEUS ZAG DAT HET GOED WAS Rewind naar de ideale crash

dEUS scheidt de straat van het podium Op de eerste dag scheidt God de dag van de nacht, of beter: de straat van het podium. Tom Barman, een creatieve jongeling van ’t Stad, zoekt regelmatig straathoeken op met zijn gitaar, maar hij wil meer. Samen met die andere jonge blonde god Stef Kamil Carlens schept hij in 1991 dEUS – met een kleine ‘d’. Dat is geen geval van Antwerpse bescheidenheid, hij vernoemt zijn creatuur naar een nummer van The Sugarcubes, de band van de IJslandse Björk Guðmundsdóttir. “Deus does not exit,” klinkt het daarin, maar dEUS is for real. Belgisch, maar ongezien: tegelijk arrogant en naïef, creatief en vrij. “Zwaar gehavende, alternaïeve, stagegrage rockgroep, kruising van Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, Velvet Underground, Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Tom Waits, JJ Cale, Dinosaur Jr. zoekt bassist & drummer,” luidt een vroeg zoekertje. “Optredens in ’t verschiet.” Ze schrijven zich

in voor Humo’s Rock Rally, editie 1992. De finale ligt open, Tom Barman doet zijn haarband aan, maar gOD heeft een offday. Evil Superstars dingt ook mee, maar het is Charlie 45 dat goud scoort. “Een nijpend gebrek aan coherentie en de afwezigheid van echt sterke songs, maakten dat er evenveel magie in de lucht hing als in het oefenkabinet van een vrijetijdsgoochelaar,” oordeelt de jury.

dEUS laat Zea overlopen

Begin jaren 1990 is de Belgische rockscene een woestijnlandschap. TC Matic is gesplit, we moeten het doen met Gorky, The Scabs en Soulsister. Maar dEUS snelt ter hulp. Zijn debuutalbum Worst case scenario zorgt in 1994 voor een oerknal waarvan we de schokgolven vandaag nog steeds voelen. “Het is een karakterplaat die radicaliteit weer op de agenda zet,” zegt Kurt Overbergh, sinds 1997 programmator bij de AB en fan van het eerste uur. “Dat album zorgt voor de volwassenwording van de Belgische rockmuziek, het geeft haar opnieuw identiteit.” Die is Belgisch pur

God geeft niet op, dEUS knijpt de ep Zea uit zijn jonge, wilde ziel. Enkel een klein Waals label ziet het genie van deze first draft: Bang! Stef Kamil Carlens verhuist naar bas en Rudy Trouvé komt erbij, een schilder die overweg kan met een gitaar en muzikale avant-garde verkent in elfendertig groepen in de Antwerpse scene. Hij geeft ‘Right as rain’, een song van Tom Barman over zijn door alzheimer gevelde

sang – een onontwarbaar kluwen van invloeden – en tegelijk heel internationaal: een bochtige, unieke mix van grunge en jazz, samples, loops en parlando, bij elkaar geborsteld met de feel van een stelletje beatniks. Een schilderij met ruwe penseelstreken, zoals het hoesontwerp van Rudy Trouvé. “Al de rest is kak van kleine vogeltjes,” om het met producer Peter Vermeersch te zeggen. “DEUS is God,” kopt Humo. Bang! stuurt zijn poulains voor een paar shows naar Londen. Een gouden zet. De buzz groeit, platenfirma’s schuiven aan voor een audiëntie bij gOD. Een klein groepje uit Antwerpen tekent uiteindelijk bij het grote Island van Tom Waits en Roxy Music. De invloedrijke dj Steve Lamacq van de BBC vindt niet genoeg adjectieven om de band de hemel in te prijzen. De krijsende vioolriff van Klaas Janzoos is het alarmsignaal van de oerknal, de clip van ‘Suds & soda’ gaat in high rotation op MTV, Beavis & Butthead verlekkeren zich op “fried eggs”. Glastonbury volgt, dEUS wordt genomineerd voor twee MTV Awards, waaronder ‘Best Breakthrough Act’.

De sterren lonken naar dEUS De Antwerpse godenkinderen zijn op weg om wereldsterren te worden. De internationale pers strooit met loftuitingen, dEUS wordt op handen gedragen door de collega’s van REM en Radiohead. Brian Molko heeft net Placebo gesticht. Hij luistert een jaar lang elke dag naar Worst case scenario en vindt de plaat artistiek even belangrijk als het debuut van The Velvet Underground. De piefen van Island denken de nieuwe Nirvana in handen te hebben. De groep mag naar Amerika, maar drummer Jules De Borgher breekt zijn hiel. Typisch dEUS, dat op zijn pad naar werelddominantie telkens stokken in de wielen krijgt, al dan niet door zichzelf. Barman en Carlens doen wat akoestische showcases, maar Amerika weet zich geen raad met de arty Antwerpenaren. Het grillige tussendoortje My sister = my clock schept nog meer verwarring. Het dient vooral om brandjes te blussen, maar het baat niet: Rudy Trouvé vindt dat het succes hem corrumpeert en geeft er eind 1996 de brui aan. Enter de Schot Craig Ward.

dEUS paseert de turnpike DEUS toont nog meer eigenzinnigheid met ‘Theme from turnpike’. De voorloper van zijn tweede album In a bar, under the sea is geboetseerd rond een sample van jazzbassist Charles Mingus die een ontaardt in een

brommend oergeluid waarvan je nog steeds niet weet of het een blaasinstrument is of een uit elkaar rammelende stoommachine. Tom Barman draait er een clip bij die in Europese zalen de film Trainspotting voorafgaat, met Seymour Cassel en Sam ‘Windman’ Louwyck in de hoofdrol. DEUS mag mee met PJ Harvey naar de VS en Australië, maar Stef Kamil Carlens wil liever de hort op met zijn eigen project, Moondog Jr. Zijn vertrek slaat een diepe wond, Danny ‘Cool Rocket’ Mommens levert de pleister. DEUS trekt toch naar de VS, voor een passage op het iconische showcasefestival SXSW. Het Amerikaanse muziekblad Rolling Stone rekent hen bij de vijf beste acts, maar wanneer de groep in 1997 terugkeert naar LA speelt hij voor anderhalve man en een paardenkop. Ook gOD heeft zijn beperkingen en bijt net als zowat elke Belgische rockband zijn tanden stuk op de States.

Help me, Ronda, denkt dEUS Zijn grillige parcours is zelfs voor dEUS vermoeiend. De groep verkast naar Ronda in Zuid-Spanje om er uit te blazen in het hotel dat het management zich daar heeft aangeschaft, maar vooral om te sleutelen aan zijn nieuwe album in de studio iets verderop. Ze blijven er uiteindelijk anderhalf jaar. Er wordt flink gefeest, maar ook hard gewerkt. Klaas Janzoons overtreft zichzelf als arrangeur. Craig Ward toont zijn briljante, maar ook zijn moeilijke kant. Elke beslissing is een botsing. “The perfect storm,” noemt Barman de periode in Spanje, zonder wrijving geen glans. Hij schraapt over zijn door de liefde geblutste ziel en giet zijn coming-of-age in donkere, maar melodieuze songs. Het monster van de chaos wordt op 15 maart 1999 getemd als The ideal crash. Een bitterzoete, maar voor dEUS’ doen bijzonder homogene plaat. ‘Instant street’ en ‘Sister dew’ zijn instant classics. Groepen als Coldplay, Snow Patrol en Elbow

Acrobatentoeren op Rock Werchter: dEUS steekt de fik erin

stortvloed aan nieuwe projecten. Hij regisseert zijn eerste langspeelfilm, Any way the wind blows, die in 2003 uitkomt. Hij zet een cowboyhoed op en creëert met CJ Bolland het elektrovehikel Magnus. Samen met pianist Guy Van Nueten kleedt hij zijn en andermans songs live uit. En hij compileert een album voor jazzlabel Blue Note. Een periode die hij vandaag omschrijft als een van de gelukkigste van zijn leven. Zijprojecten hebben het dEUS vaak afgeleid, maar ook gevoed.

dEUS drukt op rewind tanen in de Spaanse zon, en zoeken vervolgens verkoeling

outen zich als fan. “The ideal crash is het moment waarop hun kunnen kristalliseert,” blikt Kurt Overbergh terug. “De spanningsboog tussen de muzikale dwarsheid en de prachtige melodieën in het hoofd van Tom Barman bereikt een hoogtepunt.”

dEUS versus de finale crash Voor zijn platenfirma is het niettemin “make-or-break time for dEUS”. Van The ideal crash gaan een half miljoen exemplaren over de toonbank, maar dat is in pre-streamingtijden niet genoeg. DEUS zet het op een toeren. De groep verkoopt drie keer de AB uit, een record, en headlinet Axion Beach Rock. Op Glastonbury kijkt het voltallige REM van op het podium toe. Tim Vanhamel, ex-Superstar, versterkt de rangen, sommige shows spuwen (letterlijk) vuur. Maar de tournee is slopend. Jules De Borgher is zijn mojo kwijt en wordt bedankt. Nadat Craig Ward het schip verlaat net voor een show in Edinburgh en Danny Mommens vervolgens de tourbus op stelten zet, slaan bij Barman de stoppen door: hij verkoopt Mommens een pak slaag. Exit Cool Rocket, die zich wil concentreren op zijn groep Vive La Fête. Is dit dan de finale crash? Barman ontwijkt de brokstukken met een

Fast forward naar vandaag: dEUS heeft na zijn moeilijke comebackplaat Pocket revolution nog drie albums ingeblikt, Tom Barman vond een nieuwe taal uit met TaxiWars en zag die andere gOD, Mauro Pawlowski, komen én zijn plek alweer afstaan aan Bruno De Groote. Nostalgie is hen vreemd, maar twintig jaar na The ideal crash ziet dEUS dat het goed is, en drukt alsnog de rewindknop in, om zijn magnum opus acht dagen na elkaar van a tot z te spelen. “Het heeft even geduurd voor we ze konden overtuigen,” zegt Kurt Overbergh, “maar dan wilden ze meteen dat record breken van Channel Zero, Puggy en Arsenal, die zes keer na elkaar de AB vulden.” Zorg ervoor dat u niet zo stil bent als in 1999 wanneer dEUS ideaal crasht met tien keer goud, van ‘Put the freaks up front’ tot ‘Dream sequence #1’. Wees op tijd voor de voorprogramma’s, net als destijds zet dEUS Belgisch talent op een voetstuk, van Sons tot Crayon Sun. En als u braaf bent krijgt u nog een toetje toe – wij bidden voor ‘Nothing really ends.’

Artists teach free lessons EN

To many Brussels locals, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts may not seem very relevant. And yet many of the international artists who are coming to the capital for the next few weeks are firmly rooted in social realities. To lower the threshold between the street and the arts scene even more, the festival centre is transforming into a Free School in the heart of Molenbeek for ten days. Artists whose work is featured on the regular programme will teach free dance lessons, workshops in car mechanics and architecture, a masterclass on the politics of sexuality, a science fiction reading and writing group, and many others. The aim is to share experiences, transfer knowledge, and start conversations. — MICHAËL BELLON

GÉRALD KURDIAN The French-American musician and theatremaker Gérald Kurdian has lived in Brussels intermittently for the past fifteen years. He has collaborated with Mette Ingvartsen, Andros Zins-Browne, and Eleanor Bauer, and he recently started a residency at La Bellone. Under the title Hot Bodies of the Future, he has started a research cycle focused on the utopian, post-capitalist body: by rethinking our approach to the bodily, he also seeks to rethink the political. This will result, among other things, in a Hot Bodies Choir at Bozar on 17 May and a ball on 25 May. Kurdian’s contribution to the Arts Festival’s Free School is the Hot Bodies Camp. “Many artists wonder who it is that they make their art for, and so it is simply magical that the Arts Festival is investing in this kind of artistic project. Since the end of January, I have had regular meetings with the eighteen pupils in the 5th year of car maintenance/mechanics at the Institut Saint-Joseph in Etterbeek. They normally learn how to build and repair cars on an industrial scale. I proposed that in addition to their technical knowledge, they could also apply their imagination, in exchange for material assistance, and we could collaborate to construct something together that would not normally be part of their programme. If you look at their production model, economic importance, and symbolic value

in terms of ownership, status, and freedom, cars are capitalist objects par excellence. Our aim was literally and figuratively to rebuild a car into a home for a futurist, post-capitalist world. We found an old Volvo from the seventies and the pupils are now collectively turning it inside out, Mad Max style. Over the course of this project, we spent a lot of time talking, and I was always

ANNE-LISE LE GAC The young French artist Anne-Lise Le Gac has a background in the visual arts, but primarily makes performances that are difficult to categorize (barbecue-conference, anybody?). The performance Ductus Midi that she is presenting with DIY musician Arthur Chambry, and which may shed new light both on pottery-making and the imitation of bird sounds, is not planning to walk any well-trodden paths either. The parallel open studio looks like it will be a cosy clash of people, materials, and possibilities. “We started working on Ductus Midi without any clear-cut ideas. Arthur’s homemade instruments inspire both movement and music from classical to noise. We were looking for somebody with a more minimalistic, acoustic approach, and that led us to Christophe Manivet, a bird sound imitator from Marseille, where we are based. And then there is also Katerina Andreou, who loves dancing organic freestyle and mutated house from the clubs, despite her classical dance training. Both in the performance on the main stage and in the open studios for our particular fans, we seek to create a place of encounter for various practices and without any rules. I found the medieval principle of the Ductus in the book Lines: A Brief History by British anthropologist Tim Ingold, which is about how people try to draw

Letters and books also draw straight lines through stories that in the oral traditions were more capricious and changeable because they were interpreted, remembered, and transmitted in a much more subjective way. Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues is a grande dame of international dance. She has been active internationally since the 1980s, she has been a guest of the festival several times, and she used to teach at PARTS. But throughout all those years, she has also been of enormous importance in the dance world of her homeland. Her company settled in the large favela called Maré in Rio de Janeiro, where she founded the Centro de Artes da Maré in cooperation with the NGO Redes in 2009, and in 2012 founded the Escola Livre de Dança da Maré, a free dance school for more than 300 students. Rodrigues is coming to the Arts Festival to present the dance performance Fúria with her company, who will also teach two lessons at the Free School. As the closing event of the Free School, she will sit down for a conversation with the Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula. “I will not say anything about the dance production because you cannot describe a dance production. You have to see it. All I can say is that we are trying to convey an important message with very few means, because the Brazilian government no longer gives us a single cent. Everything that you see onstage was made by us from recycled materials, and it all fits in four suitcases so that we can travel with it cheaply.” “I see the dance classes as encounters that should be as

Une récompense prestigieuse qui n’est pas un fait isolé puisque la jeune photographe bruxelloise fraîchement installée à Amsterdam raflait en septembre dernier le Unseen Dummy Award, le concours basé aux Pays-Bas qui allait lui permettre de matérialiser sa série au long cours (2015-2018) sous la forme d’un livre surprenant à l’effet magnétique.

SENTIMENTS DE COMMUNAUTÉ La mise en page singulière de Ubuntu - I Am because We Are, un flot ininterrompu et débordant de pleines pages en noir et blanc, facilite l’immersion du spectateur dans un

univers inexploré de la photographie contemporaine: la communauté congolaise de Liedekerke, un village enfoncé dans le Brabant Flamand, à travers ses mariages, ses anniversaires et ses enterrements. « Mon amie Tracy se rendait souvent à des fêtes et un jour, je lui ai demandé si je pouvais l’accompagner. Ce travail s’est d’abord présenté à moi comme une quête qui allait me permettre de comprendre quelle photographe je suis et de retrouver la passion, » explique Fertinel. Sur la piste de danse, au milieu du kitch des tables élégamment dressées, au pied d’une tombe fraîchement creusée, la photographe cherche et cherche encore, inlassablement. Que

cherche-t-elle, au fond ? Qui sont ces fantômes en robes somptueuses qui semblent émerger du néant ? Quel est ce doux mystère qui s’invite sans crier gare dans les images de Rebecca Fertinel ? « Étant née en Roumanie et ayant été adoptée à l’âge de trois ans, je n’ai jamais su ce que c’était que de partager un sentiment de communauté, » confie la photographe. « Je trouve ça très beau quand mes amies appellent la maison dans leur langue maternelle. Je voulais montrer comment la communauté peut être vécue dans cette culture et la beauté qui en émane.»

Pendant quatre ans, Rebecca Fertinel a photographié les célébrations d’amour, de vie et de mort qui ont rythmé la vie communautaire de son amie Tracy.

Ni totalement Congolais, ni totalement Belges. Ni complètement ensemble, mais pas seuls pour autant, Ubuntu est peut-être d’abord le miroir d’une génération, celle des enfants et petits-enfants d’immigrés africains dont les questionnements identitaires font intimement écho à ceux de la photographe. « C’est un sujet qui concerne notre génération, une génération entre deux mondes qui se demande ce qu’elle désire ou non garder de sa culture d’origine.» Prenant radicalement le contre-pied de la photographie événementielle et évitant l’écueil du reportage (encore trop souvent) exotisant lorsqu’il s’agit de poser un regard sur les communautés africaines, Ubuntu se décline comme une fête congolaise éternelle où les décalages légers - avant ou après que la photo officielle, léchée et contrôlée ne soit prise - trahissent l’émotion, la vraie. La joie, la mélancolie, la nostalgie, le chagrin, l’angoisse, beaucoup de fierté et d’amour, traversent le viseur de Rebecca Fertinel, comme aspirés par la puissance de ses propres états d’âme. « Chaque image traduit la manière dont je me sentais sur le moment,» dit Fertinel. « En ouvrant mon livre, vous saurez quel type de personne je suis. » Se chercher dans l’autre. Se sentir vibrer au sein d’un ensemble humain infiniment plus grand : Ubuntu. « Je suis ce que je suis grâce à ce que nous sommes tous, » enseigne la philosophie bantoue. Samen vertellen ze een hoopvol sprookje over een jonge tiener, die ondanks de dystopische wereld waarin ze gevangen zit de regie over haar toekomst in eigen handen neemt. — TOM PEETERS

en kleine vijf jaar geleden liet de Nederlandse zanger Erik de Jong het AB-publiek kennismaken met zijn eerste stappen in de danswereld. De fragiele liedjes die de voormalige postbeambte uitbrengt onder het pseudoniem Spinvis, hadden sinds 2002 ook de Vlaming al meermaals gewezen op het feit dat er poëzie schuilt in de onbeholpenheid van alledag. In Kintsukuroi paste hij, samen met celliste en coschrijver Saartje Van Camp, het mededogen dat hij als liedjesmaker aan de dag legde voor zijn medemens voor het eerst toe op bewegende lichamen. Daarvoor sloeg hij de handen in elkaar met de Nederlandse choreograaf Adriaan Luteijn en twee dansers van het Nederlandse balletgezelschap Introdans. Voor Vier verhalen en een dag werd het personeelsbestand aanzienlijk uitgebreid. Onder andere met Marlena Wolfe, een naar Nederland verkaste Amerikaanse choreografe en balletlerares die nu samen met Luteijn en een dozijn

dansers het levensverhaal vertelt van de jonge tiener Moira. “Dat is niet toevallig ook de naam van een Griekse schikgodin,” legt Erik de Jong uit. “Het meisje wint een prijs en mag drie wensen doen. Ze kiest voor een appel, waarvan ze het pitje in de grond stopt, het startpunt voor een reis in de toekomst. Tijdens de voorstelling volgen we niet alleen de ontwikkeling van de boom die hieruit groeit, maar ook die van het meisje. Naast een sprookje is het een coming-of ageverhaal. Ik ben de verteller, maar ook die vervelende ambtenaar die de hele tijd loopt te waarschuwen dat je niets mag veranderen in de toekomst, want anders loopt alles fout! Je kan dus al raden wat Moira doet.”

“Niets ligt zo dicht bij muziek als dans, omdat het kunstvormen zijn die in de tijd bestaan,” zei je, Erik. ERIK DE JONG: Klopt. Dat heb ik niet

van bij het begin van onze cultuur aan elkaar. Muziek mag zich in het Westen dan als een aparte kunstvorm ontwikkeld hebben, in veel andere culturen zijn muziek en dans één.

Marlena, hoe heb jij die collusie tussen dans en muziek ervaren? MARLENA WOLFE: Als danser heb je

sowieso een intieme relatie met muziek. Er gaat niets boven livemuziek, zodat je die samensmelting ook lijfelijk kan voelen op het podium. De taal en de tools van dansers en choreografen zijn verschillend van die van muzikanten. Maar ontstaat er een natuurlijke band tussen de twee, wat bij deze voorstelling het geval was, dan creëer je een haast eindeloos speelveld. Veel van mijn choreografieën beginnen vanuit muziek. Soms ook vanuit stilte, maar dan komt de muziek halverwege altijd binnensluipen, waarop zich een permanente wisselwerking op gang trekt. Het is een circulaire conversatie. DE JONG: Een schilderij of een boek is voor altijd. Livemuziek en -dans zijn dat niet. Ze komen voort uit het menselijk lichaam. Ze zijn er een moment en vervliegen daarna. Dat maakt het voor mij nog poëtischer. Eerst was ons verhaal meer geëngageerd en politiek correct. Maar we kwamen er snel achter dat het te letterlijk was. Toen we er een sprookje van maakten, werd het speelser en lichter.

Omdat dans eveneens over verhalende kracht beschikt kon je woorden weglaten? DE JONG: Ja, als een dans goed

gemaakt en gebracht is, heb je eigenlijk geen woorden meer nodig. Moira wil weten hoe het met haar appelboom gesteld is over honderd, duizend en tienduizend jaar. Maar het antwoord daarop zingen we niet. Dat vertelt de dans ons. Hoe

vreemd, anders, moeilijk of gevaarlijk de relaties tussen mensen geworden zijn, zit vooral in de bewegingen. We hebben gemerkt dat vooral kinderen dat veel sneller oppikken. WOLFE: Onderschat hen niet. Het zijn sponzen. Hun verbeelding is nog niet gekortwiekt door het leven. Door woorden weg te laten kan iedereen er zijn eigen verhaal bij verzinnen. Zo wordt onze boodschap – bouw je eigen toekomst, want ze ligt niet vast – extra in de verf gezet. DE JONG: Er komen zoveel nare berichten op ons af, over robots die het zullen overnemen en het milieu dat eraan gaat, dat het tijd werd om te verkondigen dat we onze toekomst wel degelijk zelf kunnen vormgeven.

ERIK DE JONG:

“Muziek en dans zijn er een moment en vervliegen daarna. Dat maakt het voor mij nog poëtischer” Maar hoe verbeeld je een dystopische wereld vol artificiële intelligentie en zonder privacy waarin je voortdurend op de limieten van je vrijheden botst? DE JONG: In de laatste wereld,

tienduizend jaar later, geldt er één heel belangrijke regel: je mag de laatste appel niet plukken. In de dans die Marlena daarbij maakte, hangt een constante dreiging in de lucht… tot het onvermijdelijke gebeurt, en dan verandert alles. Dan stappen we letterlijk uit het verhaal. Dan heeft Moira van een voorgeschreven verhaal haar eigen verhaal gemaakt.

After four years at the helm of Brussels Philharmonic, Stéphane Denève has pushed the orchestra to unheard heights, charming audiences and racking up awards along the way. And so it comes as no surprise that he is prolonging his stay – three more years! — JASPER CROONEN

hen Stéphane Denève took over from Michel Tabachnik in 2015, he was the next step in an ongoing revitalization of Brussels Philharmonic, an orchestra which for years had been trying to shed the old skin of their past life as the BRT Philharmonic Orchestra. At that time, the man had had a whirlwind of a career as a music director both in Scotland and Stuttgart. But the good-natured and ever so talkative Frenchman was excited about the challenge of leading our capital’s musicians. It was the innovative and liberating programming that wooed him. “Other orchestras work like museums, but Brussels is unique. There’s so much freedom here,” he said then. “And I still feel the same. I always strive to have interesting programmes. Here I can just dream up concerts together with Judith (Van Eeckhout, artistic administrator, jc). And I’ve always been able to incorporate 21st-century pieces.”

The development of contemporary symphonic music is very close to your heart. Are you trying to educate your audiences? STÉPHANE DENÈVE: I wouldn’t say that. I just love discovering great new things. Whether it’s a new book, a new exhibit, or a new piece of music. And no, that doesn’t automatically mean I don’t enjoy old museums or literary classics. People just seem a lot more open to modern art or present-day writing, but then they have this cliché in their head that the music of our time is intellectual. I want to change their perception. That’s also why we started the Centre for future Orchestral Repertoire (CffOR), to show people that there is fantastic music being written even today. Take the concert Le temps l’horloge by Dutilleux, for example. It was written in 2007 and it is way more accessible than Le poème de l’extase, which was written in the 20th century. And yet people do not know the former.

Does it help to ease people in when you combine contemporary pieces with masterpieces from the previous century? DENÈVE: It’s not that I make a point of

putting an easy piece next to a difficult piece. Every programme is a new journey. Like making a good meal, you have to balance the flavours. Most importantly, we always try to make our programme coherent. For the season finale, all the compositions are linked by poems. Duttileux was inspired by Tardieu and Desnos, there’s Mallarmé in the Debussy piece, Utyos is inspired by Chekhov, and of course there’s Le poème de l’extase itself. We do not

throw these things together haphazardly. There has to be a theme or a leitmotif.

Another common thread through your concerts is the canon of 20th-century symphonic music. Just this season you started with the iconic Sacre du Printemps and are ending with Debussy’s Prélude à l’après midi d’un faune. What attracts you to this era? DENÈVE: I’m French so I might be a bit

chauvinistic, but especially in Paris it truly was a golden age. The composers really explored the true potential of the orchestra and its colours. That magic of colour is something I’m very sensitive to. When I’m conducting pieces like that from Debussy, which is a work rooted in impressionism, it almost feels like I’m painting the music on a canvas. Recently, when I was conducting in Philadelphia, the concertmaster told me that I was able to show them a new set of colours in a piece. That’s one of the greatest compliments anyone could give me.

In addition to extending your tenure with Brussels Philharmonic, you are also starting a new job in St. Louis. How will you make sure Brussels isn’t playing second fiddle? DENÈVE: Oh, it won’t. I’ve been going to

the States four to five times a year for a while now. Not only to St. Louis but, like I said, also to Philadelphia. I’m very honoured, of course, that I have been appointed to the post of Music Director at the St. Louis Symphony, but that doesn’t mean I’ll have less time for Brussels. If anything, I’ll be guest conducting fewer orchestras, which means I’ll only have to focus on two of them. And that might even be a good thing for Brussels Philharmonic.

When you announced your contract renewal you said you wanted to continue the ambitious programme of the orchestra. But how do you top a season during which you played at Carnegie Hall? DENÈVE: It’s certainly true that we

fulfilled a dream in playing at that legendary venue in New York. It was such an incredible concert and such a magical day. I think it was my best concert ever with Brussels Philharmonic. I feel sorry for the people of Brussels that it wasn’t at home. But we’ve still got a lot of tricks up our sleeve. We want to take our bold, 21st-century programmes on tour without having to compromise. That’s something we’re working very hard towards. Taking the ideology of the CffOR to concert halls around the world.

You talked about themes in your programmes. If you had to find one for next season, what would it be? DENÈVE: I’d say “The Mount Everests of

classical music”. I think you’ll agree with me that the orchestra is doing extraordinarily so we’re up for the challenge of bringing the pinnacles of Western symphonic music to Flagey. I can’t tell you too much about it, but let’s just say 2020 is the year of Beethoven. It will be big.

A contract extension also means you’re staying in our capital a little while longer. You’re not too chauvinistic to dislike living abroad then? DENÈVE: (Laughs) Oh no, I feel right at

home in Brussels. I like the spirit of the city. It’s very open minded and I love how you switch languages all the time. I used to cross the border regularly as a kid, so I feel as though I’m staying close to my roots. My wife loves it as well, she’s Swedish so she doesn’t think it’s too cold here. And most importantly, when I’m on tour, I miss Brussels. I miss Flagey and most of all, I miss the Belga, because after a concert, all you really want is a beer.

Le Festival de Cannes vient à peine de dérouler son tapis rouge que l’on peut déjà profiter d’un des grands films en compétition: l’intime Dolor y gloria de Pedro Almodóvar. — NIELS RUËLL Il vaut mieux reporter Dolor y gloria si vous n’êtes pas encore familier de l’œuvre de Pedro Almodóvar. Le film est vraiment bouleversant à la lumière des nombreux liens avec ses anciens films très appréciés du grand public. Almodóvar dit lui-même que le film complète involontairement une trilogie qui a commencé avec La Loi du désir et s’est poursuivie avec La Mauvaise Éducation. Nous avons également pensé à Volver, La Fleur de mon secret, Tout sur ma mère et aux nombreux films qu’il a réalisés avec Antonio Banderas au cours des quarante dernières années. Il y a fort à parier que, tôt ou tard, une thèse sur le cinéma fera la comparaison avec Huit et demi de Federico Fellini. Après tout, dans les deux films, un cinéaste réputé n’arrive plus à faire de films, s’isole et se rappelle ses précieux souvenirs d’enfance. Almodóvar en a fait un film très personnel : il a prêté son appartement, ses peintures, ses maux, ses vêtements et sa coupe de cheveux au personnage principal interprété par Banderas. La douleur chronique empêche un réalisateur célèbre mais très solitaire de filmer, ce qui lui enlève presque tout goût à la vie. Désespéré, il recherche un acteur avec qui il a rompu pour fumer ensemble de l’héroïne. Le film raconte une renaissance, comment la lumière peut revenir dans les ténèbres si on se réconcilie avec le passé et si on se résigne à l’inévitable interaction entre fiction et réalité, travail et vie privée, douleur et gloire. La nostalgie ruisselle des scènes ensoleillées de son enfance dans une

grotte transformée en maison. Ce qui aboutit à la révélation du désir originel. Plus difficiles sont les souvenirs des dernières conversations avec sa mère aimante mais aigrie. On atteint un sommet émotionnel lors de retrouvailles miraculeuses avec un amant qui avait disparu de sa vie après les folles années quatre-vingt à Madrid. Almodóvar aura peut-être septante ans cette année, son art de la narration (celui d’un bon auteur de feuilleton), son utilisation des couleurs (celle d’un bon peintre) et son sens du style sont intacts. 8½ sur dix.

Van het verhaal van Sunset begrijp je evenveel als van een nachtmerrie die beslag legt op je weinige uren slaap tijdens een broeierige zomernacht. Dat is frustrerend, maar niet belangrijk. De jonge Írisz – de erg intrigerende Juli Jakab – zoekt het Boedapest van 1913 op met de koortsige drang om enkele mysteries op te helderen. Welke sinistere krachten veroorzaakten de brand die jaren eerder haar joodse ouders doodde en wat bekokstooft de sinistere man die hun gerenommeerde hoedenwinkel verder uitbouwde? Waar is haar van allerlei onheil beschuldigde broer? Nooit krijgt zij of de kijker zicht op de complotten, moorden, aanslagen en revolutionaire sfeer die Boedapest beheersen, maar het klimaat is zo verschroeiend en onheilszwanger dat het niet verbaast dat even later de Eerste Wereldoorlog zal uitbreken die van het Oostenrijks-Hongaarse rijk geschiedenis maakt. Verhaal én geschiedenisles zijn ondergeschikt aan de onderdompelende ervaring die regisseur László Nemes creëert met cinematografische middelen. U kent de Hongaar van Son of Saul. Die bijzonder benauwende, overweldigende film over een individu in het concentratiekamp van Auschwitz was duidelijk geen toevalstreffer. (NR)

The romcom has seen better days and Long Shot will certainly not herald the survival, but don’t hesitate to see this if you want to relax for two hours with an undemanding feelgood movie with plenty of humour and romance. The plot is remarkably thin and despite the political setting, you can expect little to no fighting political humour. An idealistic and hard-working Secretary of State sees her chance for a shot at the presidency when the completely incompetent president of the United States sets his sights on a more prestigious job: film star. To make a more sympathetic impression, she asks a rather vulgar, unemployed but idealistic journalist to become her speechwriter. A romantic relationship is completely unlikely, but in romcoms unlikely is a synonym for highly likely. And so Seth Rogen ends up in bed with Charlize Theron. The all-rounder Theron is not a natural comic talent, but she effortlessly stands her ground in this register. Twelve years after Knocked Up, Rogen is still playing exactly the same character: the stoner who still manages to get all the beautiful girls he meets. Fortunately, many of his jokes do precisely what they are supposed to do: make you laugh, even if only briefly. You get the rehabilitation of the Roxette hit “It must have been love” thrown in for free. (NR)

Ni elle ni le spectateur ne discernent les complots, les assassinats, les attentats et l’atmosphère révolutionnaire qui règnent sur la ville, mais le climat est si tendu qu’il n’est pas surprenant que la Première Guerre mondiale éclate un peu plus tard. L’histoire et la leçon d’Histoire sont subordonnées à l’expérience cinématographique immersive. László Nemes prouve que Son of Saul n’était pas un coup de chance.

Long shot zal de revival van de romcom niet inluiden, maar aarzel niet als u twee uurtjes wil ontspannen met een niet te veeleisende feelgoodfilm.

Neither she nor the viewer ever gain deeper insight into the conspiracies, mur ders, attacks, and revolutionary atmosphere that grip the city, but the climate is so suf fused with impending doom that it comes as no surprise when the First World War breaks out. Both the story and the history lesson play second fiddle to the immersive cinemato graphic experience. László Nemes proves that Son of Saul was not just a fluke.

Une secrétaire d’État idéaliste et qui se tue à la tâche (Charlize Theron) a l’occasion de tenter d’accéder à la présidence lorsque le président des États-Unis, totalement incompétent, envisage une carrière comme star de cinéma. Pour paraître plus drôle, elle demande à un journaliste rustre mais idéaliste (Seth Rogen) de retravailler ses discours. Long Shot n’annonce pas le renouveau de la comédie romantique, mais n’hésitez pas si vous voulez vous détendre devant un film anti-déprime, pas trop exigeant.

Beyond the pose Rineke Dijkstra’s photos of adolescents on the beach, along with her series of Portuguese bullfighters – smeared in blood – and portraits of young mothers catapulted her to stardom in the 1990s. The Amsterdam-based photographer avoids poses but waits for the moment when the masks fall and the walls that her models build around themselves come down. Dijkstra wants emotion. The vulnerability in her images attests that she is an empathetic

photographer. With Tia, the 1994 double portrait of a young mother here on show, Dijkstra beautifully captured the complexity of human emotion. On the left, Tia stares into the lens completely exhausted, while the picture on the right was taken five months later. Having recovered from her delivery, the new mother looks straight ahead self-confidently. This is striking: if we think of Dijkstra’s work, it is discomfort and uncertainty that come to mind.

Dijkstra’s photos are always printed on large format. This gives special importance to little details in what at a cursory glance would seem to be simple images. The red blush on the cheeks of the schoolboy in Park Portraits (photo) matches the colour of his uniform jacket perfectly. You take your time for a Dijkstra. The photographer also takes her time. She uses a large-format camera on a tripod. But her laborious method is the tried and tested recipe for pictures in which

the subjects let down their guard. Although we cannot say that Dijkstra thereby shows us the true face of her model. She consciously looks for vulnerable shyness. When she took a portrait of her friend and fellow photographer Charlotte Dumas, Dumas herself remarked: “It is more a work by her than a photo of me.” Besides Tia, Park Portraits and a portrait of Dumas and the American artist Taryn Simon, some of her powerful images of adolescents on the beach are on show. The series Odessa, Ukraine dates from 1993 but these particular images were only shown to the general public two years ago at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Recent works are not being shown at Jan Mot, but there is nothing wrong with that. A small exhibition of photos by the master of portraiture is worth a visit in any case.

Avec une adresse comme La Fourmilière, Anderlecht prouve plus que jamais qu’elle est une commune avec un énorme potentiel. Et un cœur gros comme ça… — MICHEL VERLINDEN • PHOTO: SASKIA VANDERSTICHELE À l’ombre de la Collégiale Saints-Pierre et Guidon, Anderlecht ressemble plus que jamais à un village. C’est à cet endroit délicieux que Robin Cardoen (24 ans) et Bruno Tellier (26 ans) ont décidé d’implanter une adresse pas comme les autres. À la fois bar, espace de coworking (8€ la demi-journée, 6€ pour les étudiants), lieu de culture (ateliers, projections, concerts, DJs…) et carrefour convivial, leur Fourmilière occupe un créneau inédit au sein de la commune. Il suffit de jeter un œil aux alentours pour constater que ce sont les établissements axés sur le foot – et l’écran qui va avec - qui ont la cote. C’est d’autant plus dommage qu’avec les nombreux centres culturels – tant néerlandophones que francophones – du coin, la demande est bien là. Cette enseigne ouverte depuis 5 mois a pris ses quartiers dans un ancien vidéoclub laissé à l’abandon. Le décor ? Lumineux, un rien sinueux mais bien agencé. Celui-ci s’ouvre sur un bar surmonté de plantes vertes. En le dépassant, on découvre un petit salon confortable, du mobilier vintage et une longue table d’hôtes. On aime les murs qui s’offrent aux créatifs bruxellois – au moment de notre visite, il s’agissait des peintures sur carton de Zephyr, un artiste local

au coup de pinceau brut(al). Bien vu, les deux propriétaires ont eu recours au ferronnier Walden Project pour la fabrication des tables et des tabourets, ce qui ne manque pas d’allure. En phase avec son époque, cette Fourmilière pense « zéro déchet », approvisionnement local et commerce équitable. Une démarche plus que louable mais pas forcément facile à mettre en place. En témoigne la carte qui pour le moment ne déroule qu’une sélection de boissons – la nourriture sera pour plus tard. Il reste que celles-ci tiennent la route si l’on en juge par les sodas et autres cafés bios (Oxfam, Simone a soif…). Sans oublier, les très bonnes bières retenues : Lanterne IPA (4,5€), Jambe de Bois (4€), Saison de Bruxelles (4€), Léopold 7 (4€) dont on connaît l’approche non polluante et même, en exclusivité, la Grézienne (4€), une bière issue d’une brasserie coopérative de Grez-Doiceau. Un hasard ? Certainement pas, le lieu de Robin et Bruno a également opté pour une structure de ce type – ils sont 80 coopérateurs à avoir financé le projet (les noms des intéressés étant inscrits au mur). Bref, un petit coin de paradis où il ne manque plus que quelque chose à grignoter pour en faire un QG dont on ne décolle plus.

Dat de Tour de France dit jaar in Brussel vertrekt, is ook Bozar niet ontgaan. Zo is er nu de tentoonstelling van de foto’s die de vorig jaar overleden Belgische kunste naar Jef Geys maakte in de Tour van 1969, de eerste die Eddy Merckx wist te winnen. Geys volgde het peloton twee weken lang van dichtbij, maar was niet zozeer geïnteres seerd in het podium, de finishlijn of de winnaars. Hij concentreerde zich eerder op de toeschouwers, de fietsen en de volg wagens. Op de 67 zwart-witfoto’s die tot 1 september gratis te zien zijn in Bozar duiken de renners, waaronder ook Eddy Merckx, dus eerder op als figuranten. (MB) NL

Pendant plus de quinze ans, le Père Filip a photographié ceux qui fréquentaient le club de jeunes qu’il a encadré dans le quartier Anneessens. Il passait toutes ses soirées avec eux et les emmenait parfois pour des virées en camping à la Côte, dans les Ardennes ou même en Asturies. C’étaient des moments heureux dans des années souvent difficiles ou tragiques pour ces jeunes. Trente ans plus tard, certains d’entre eux ont revu ces clichés et témoignent des émotions et des souvenirs qu’ils font surgir. Mémoire d’un quartier et d’une époque, ces images sont comme le retour à la vie d’une jeunesse oubliée. (GB) FR

In his work, Belgian artist Pieter Vermeersch likes to mix painting, architecture, and photography, abstraction and representation. In parallel with his exhibition at M Museum in Leuven, he is presenting a few pieces at the Galerie Greta Meert. The colours in his paintings spread out like luminous halos. He takes great care to conceal every trace of his process in order to delve deeper into the essence of the images, which are reduced to their simplest expression.
