Reasons why Perennials are Awesome!

Perennials are plants that live for more than two years, while annuals complete their life cycle within one year. Planting perennials has several advantages over planting annuals.

Firstly, perennials require less maintenance than annuals. Once established, they need less watering, fertilizing, and pruning compared to annuals, which need to be replanted each year. This makes perennials a more cost-effective and time-saving option.

Secondly, perennials are more environmentally friendly than annuals. Since perennials do not need to be replanted every year, they require fewer resources like water, fertilizers, and pesticides. This reduces the carbon footprint of gardening and supports sustainable gardening practices.

Thirdly, perennials provide long-term benefits for the garden ecosystem. They provide habitat and food for pollinators and other wildlife, helping to promote biodiversity in the garden. Moreover, their deep roots help to improve soil health, reducing soil erosion and increasing nutrient retention.

Overall, planting perennials is a wise choice for gardeners who seek a low-maintenance, environmentally friendly, and ecologically beneficial garden.

If you love the look of traditionally tall Delphiniums but they’re just too tall for your use, you’re in luck! From the breeder of the New Millennium Hybrids comes a brand new series of truly dwarf Delphiniums that have all the beautiful characteristics of their taller cousins except their height. These new dwarf Delphiniums never need staking and won’t fall over in their pots. They can be grown near the front to middle of the border and work better in windy sites than taller varieties. This mix includes a variety of purple, blue, mauve, pink, lilac, and cream colored flowers. Bushy, well-branched habit and strong flower stems.

New Millennium Delphinium strains outperform all other tall types and offer some astonishingly rich shades. This mix produces tall, stately spires in a range of shades from white through pink, lavender, blue, mauve and deep purple. The deeply-cut leaves form a medium-sized bushy mound with superior vigor. Stems may require staking in windy areas, best done before they reach 3 feet in height. Removing spent spikes right after flowering will encourage repeat blooming in fall. For best flowering use a high phosphorous fertilizer each year, in early spring.

You’ll be impressed by this big and beautiful plant for both its flowering performance and its garden performance. Starting in spring, 4½" wide leaves are chartreuse and mellow to lime green in summer. Huge, 5” wide clusters of medium pink flowers are produced continuously starting in midsummer and going until early fall. Flowers dry on the stems to a lovely raspberry color, extending the attractiveness of the plant. This plant preforms best in filtered sun, as too much sun will bleach the brightly colored leaves.

A vigorous perennial forming a dense, rounded clump of small, aromatic, gray-green leaves all season long. In its first year, ‘Purrsian Blue’ forms a small, perfectly rounded, densely branched clump of tiny, green leaves. In year two, the plant maintains its compact mounding habit but nearly doubles its spread to just over two feet across. This is a very floriferous selection whose flower power is amplified by its having its flowers spaced closely together on the stems. Periwinkle blue flowers are coddled by dark purple calyxes just above the aromatic foliage from early summer into early fall.

A native grass of the Midwestern prairie, has been rediscovered as a useful and beautiful landscape plant. Drought tolerant and easy to maintain, it is a natural choice for prairie, meadow and naturalistic plantings. But, Andropogon gerardii is also great as a background or accent in mixed plantings. Big Bluestem is especially interesting when in bloom - its curiously shaped seed heads resemble upside-down turkey feet. Its foliage draws attention as it changes from green to blue-green and silvery blue in the summer, to red, orange and purple in the fall. Big Bluestem provides shelter and food for songbirds. It grows well in dry-moist, sandy, clay or shallow soils with low fertility.

Ideal for areas that require a plant that needs no special attention. It is a native grass that can be found in abandoned fields, meadows, and roadsides. It reaches four feet tall with seed heads and maintains a beautiful orangegolden hue throughout winter, stunning when planted in large masses. In meadow gardens or in natural areas it helps with soil retention. Broomsedge is extremely adaptable to poor soil and it is drought tolerant. Broomstraw is another common name given to Andropogon virginicus as it once served as material for broom making. This upright grass is native to the Southeast US and is also found in Texas and several Midwestern states.

The first ornamental grass to receive the Perennial Plant of the Year Award® (2001), earned for good looks, long-lasting plumes and undemanding growing requirements. Green foliage grows in a neat, 2-foot clump. In early spring, stalks rise up to 6 feet, capped with elongated, wheat-colored seed heads. In addition to intrinsic beauty, Feather Reed Grass exhibits tolerance for heavy clay and compacted soil and will not reseed (seeds are believed to be sterile). Plant Feather Reed Grass in sunny, dry locations and use as a backdrop for flowering perennials.

This Panicum is called Tall Switchgrass for a very good reason. At seven feet, eight feet with blooms, it is one of the tallest of the switchgrasses. During the growing season, it has stunning blue gray foliage, which turns a deep gold color in the fall. Airy, billowy seed heads appear in mid summer and remain attractive into winter. Tall Switchgrass grows in a loose vase shape and should be allowed some space in the landscape. Plant it in masses or behind shorter grasses and perennials. As with others in the Panicum genus, it tolerates poor soil, dry conditions, and prefers no fertilizer or special care simply cut back in early spring.

One of the largest and most popular ferns in cultivation today. The dark green, pinnate fronds are shaped like ostrich plumes, being much wider at the top and tapering down to a bare stipe. The first set of leaves is sterile and has a gracefully arching form. These leaves can reach heights of 6' in ideal environments. This set of leaves dies back by early to midsummer and is replaced by a set of fertile, dark green leaves which are about half the height of the sterile ones. These leaves turn a shiny bronzegold in fall, becoming brown in winter.
