Environmental epidemiology is the study of the relationship between environmental exposure s (such as chemicals, radiation, and microbiological agents) and human health.

Because humans cannot ethically be exposed to agents that are known or suspected to cause d isease, observational studies, which simply observe exposures that people have already experi enced, are common in environmental epidemiology. While environmental epidemiology's inability to use experimental study designs is a limitatio n, this discipline directly observes effects on human health rather than estimating effects from animal studies.
