COMMUNITY SERVICE

“Community service is very important to us. As a team we believe in giving of yourself for the betterment of others, and this corresponds to not only how we relate to each other as teammates, but also to our community. We want to give back and are continually working at various projects during the school year to help. With opportunity comes responsibility and we understand that playing soccer at the NCAA Division I level is a privileged opportunity. We must take on board and embrace the responsibilities which come with that privilege. One such responsibility is to give back and help with the local community. The community as well as the players themselves will benefit from such service. It is central to our team philosophy.”

The Lady Techster Soccer Complex completed its 10th season of existence in 2018 as the home field for the Louisiana Tech soccer team. Located on Alabama Ave., the Lady Techster Soccer Complex features a press box, permanent bleachers, sound system, scoreboard and mounted stadium lights. Starting in late February of 2013, preparation for the installment of lights at the complex began with power lines being put in place under the soccer field to connect to the main power source. Foundations were then started in early March with the concrete needing to sit for at least 30 days. The light poles were delivered and the main frames were connected before the 1500 watt bulbs were attached and angled properly. The four poles were mounted onto the foundations and connected to the power source. Most recently, the field itself received an upgrade with a new drainage system and constructed façade retaining wall as well as a new sprinkler system. In 10 seasons, the Lady Techsters have posted a tremendous 67-20-7 record at their friendly confines, including a dominant 40-6-3 mark in non-conference play. Since joining Conference USA in 2013, the team has a conference record of 22-6-2. In 2018, LA Tech lost its second home game but then reeled off eight straight victories which tied a program record as the team went 9-1-0 on its home pitch. The nine home victories tied the single-season program record, matching the nine home wins in 2009 and 2014. The facility has seen several historical moments in Louisiana Tech soccer, starting with the 2009 home opener as LA Tech defeated Lamar 3-2 in double overtime for its first win at the complex. On Oct. 23, 2009, Kiva Gresham’s extra-frame gave LA Tech a 2-1 win over New Mexico State for their first-ever conference win. On Oct. 15, 2010 against 2009 WAC champion San Jose State, Lady Techsters came back from a two-goal halftime deficit to win 5-4 in overtime. The fourth notable match came on Oct. 5, 2012 when LA Tech stunned nationally-ranked Denver in a 1-1 tie. The fifth moment came in the regular season finale in 2014 with 1-0 overtime victory to clinch the team’s first ever appearance in the Conference USA Tournament. A similar moment came in the regular season finale in 2015 as the Techsters shutout conference regular season champion North Texas to qualify for the league tourney for the third time in the last four years. The complex also played host to the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Lady Techsters’ had three previous homes, including Ruston Junior High (2008) and Joe Aillet Stadium (2005-07), home to the Bulldog football team. “The Joe” will forever be remembered as the place where the soccer program earned its inaugural victory, a 2-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State on Aug. 28, 2005. LA Tech’s Katy Garrison scored the first goal in the stadium on an assist by Sarah Chovanec. During the program’s inaugural season in 2004, the team played all of their home games on the intramural soccer field across from the Lambright Center.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW ZETTLER LIFTS TECHSTERS TO OT VICTORY (AUG. 17)

LA TECH PITCHES SHUTOUT IN ROAD OPENER (SEPT. 24)

The Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team fought high winds and wet conditions to defeat Texas State in a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory in the 2018 season-opener on Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. Kaylee Zettler played the role of hero for the Lady Techsters as the junior was responsible for both goals, one in the 19th minute and then the game-winner in the 103rd minute to start the 2018 season on a high note.

The Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team got its threegame road stretch off on the right foot, more specifically the foot of junior Kaylee Zettler, who delivered the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Missouri State on Wednesday night at the Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. Zettler’s goal – third of the season – in the first period was enough scoring for LA Tech (4-1-0) who registered its third straight victory, and third straight shutout, as junior keeper Carlotta Cartelli and the defense stood strong against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions MSU.

SOCCER GIVES HELPING HAND AT “CLEAR THE SHELTERS” EVENT (AUG. 23) The Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team was out servicing the community once again, this time in Monroe to give a helping hand to local animal rescues at the “Clear the Shelters” event. The Lady Techsters arrived and immediately got to work cleaning and putting together kennels and tables for the various shelters. Throughout the event, the team spent time with all of the animals, whether it was giving the kittens a little love, doing a fun run around the cages for the puppies or even cleaning up stinky messes.

SHERRY RECORDS MILESTONE VICTORY AT FAMILIAR PLACE (SEPT. 2) Louisiana Tech head coach Kevin Sherry came to the United States and began in college coaching career in women’s soccer back in 2001 at a place called Graceland University. Fast forward to 2018 and Sherry returned to his old stomping ground, this time to take on the Yellowjackets. As fate would have it, the 4-1 victory by the LadyTechsters on Sunday night at Rasmussen Field turned out to be an extra special one in the form of career win No. 200 in the midst of his 18th total year at the helm.

LA TECH WINS I-20 SHOWDOWN KGOALE NAMED CANDIDATE IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION (AUG. 26) FOR 2018 SENIOR CLASS AWARD The Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team came out on (SEPT. 19) top in the I-20 showdown with ULM for a fourth straight year and they did so in an overpowering way by a final score of 4-0 on Sunday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. There was no letdown after a Friday night victory like last weekend. LA TecH got on the scoreboard very early (in the third minute) and kept its foot on the gas, tacking on another goal in the first period and two more in the second period. Doing much of the damage yet again was senior Mylene Roy-Ouellet who registered two goals and one assist on the night. The striker apparently likes playing ULM since she has totaled 6 goals and two assists versus the Warhawks the past four seasons, scoring in all four meetings.

Louisiana Tech defender Nomvula Kgoale was chosen as one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award in women’s soccer. She has been heavily involved in the community, having assisted in charitable activities that have utilized her status as a college athlete to make an impact in worthwhile causes. In the classroom, the senior currently holds a 3.4 cumulative grade point average and has earned numerous accolades such as C-USA All-Academic First Team. She is also a two-time Scholar All-South Region selection and a twotime C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient. As for competition, Kgoale has made a huge impact as

a Lady Techster after transferring from Tyler Junior College in 2015. She is a two-time All-Conference USA and two-time All-Region honoree while helping LA Tech to back-to-back 14win seasons.

PEEPLES NETS GOLDEN GOAL IN 3-2 VICTORY (SEPT. 21) Louisiana Tech junior Jaelyn Peeples came into Friday night having not scored a goal in her collegiate career which consisted of 51 matches. The midfielder picked a clutch time to change that in her 52nd career match as she bent her right-footed corner kick just inside the near post in the first overtime period, helping LA Tech defeat Old Dominion by a final score of 3-2 at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. The first half had three total goals and constant rainfall. The second half had both goalkeepers forced to leave the match due to injury. Then came the rare goal off the corner kick itself for the golden goal.

LA TECH RECEIVES USC TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD, AGAIN (OCT. 4) For the 11th straight year the Louisiana Tech soccer team received the Team Academic Award, an award handed out annually by the United Soccer Coaches for exemplary performance in the classroom. LA Tech, led by 12th-year head coach Kevin Sherry, was one of 484 women’s collegiate soccer teams to earn the Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year. It is given to programs with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster. The Lady Techsters were one of seven Conference USA women’s soccer programs to receive this honor after posting a 3.35 GPA.

BARKER STRIKES IN OVERTIME FOR CONFERENCE WIN (OCT. 11) Freshman Connor Barker got her second career start and came up big for the Louisiana Tech soccer team, scoring the golden goal early in the first overtime period to help notch a 1-0 victory over UTEP on a chilly Thursday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. LA Tech picked up its 10th win of the season, marking the fifth straight year with double-digit victories. Just as important, they picked up three points to bring their total to 10 with three league matches remaining. It appeared as though they would win it in regulation since UTEP’s star player Lauren Crenshaw was issued a straight red card 15 minutes into the match. However, the Miners were able to take the scoreless match into overtime, but Barker connected on what was her game-high seventh shot attempt of the night which came in the 91st minute.

LA TECH SHUTS OUT SOUTHERN MISS ON SENIOR NIGHT (OCT. 26) The Louisiana Tech soccer team finished the regular season on a high note, extending its home winning streak to eight with a 2-0 shutout victory over Southern Miss on a chilly Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. LA Tech ended up winning all five of its conference home matches. Coupled with a pair of draws on the road, the Lady Techsters finished with 17 league points which slots them securely into the No. 4 seed for the C-USA Tournament. It was a special celebration post-game for the four seniors – Makenna Johnson, Nomvula Kgoale, Courtney Tompkins and Mylene Roy-Ouellet. During the game though, it was the foot of freshman Connor Barker that stole the show as she netted both goals on the night to help deliver the victory.

THREE LADY TECHSTERS EARN CONFERENCE USA HONORS (OCT. 30) After helping the Louisiana Tech soccer team to a 12-win season and a fourth-place finish in the league standings, Nomvula Kgoale, Elizabeth Doll and Alexandra Augustyn earned Conference USA honors in a vote by the 14 league coaches. Kgoale, a senior midfielder, received first team honors for the second straight season and becomes just the second player in program history to be a three-time all-conference selection. Doll, a sophomore defender, earned her first postseason honor being named to the third team. And the defender Augustyn was named to the All-Freshman Team, the fifth time in the last six years LA Tech has had a player selected as a newcomer.

LA TECH STUNS ODU, ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS (OCT. 31) For a second straight season Louisiana Tech trailed Old Dominion in the C-USA Tournament Quarterfinals. And for a second straight season the Lady Techsters stunned the Monarchs, coming back from a 2-0 deficit this time to win the match 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament at the ODU Soccer Complex. All seemed lost when No 4-seeded LA Tech down two goals early in the second period to No. 5-seeded Old Dominion (8-7-4) who were not only playing on its home pitch, but also riding a seven-match unbeaten streak which included a shutout win over the regular season champion North Texas. However, the Lady Techsters were a resilient bunch. They sliced the deficit in half on a header goal by Elizabeth Doll which gave them life. Then with less than four minutes left in regulation, Hanna Banks equalized. Then it was Mylene Roy-Ouellet who delivered the game-winning goal to make it three unanswered goals and the victory.

Even though the Westerwinds lost the conference championship, they finished with an 11-7-1 record. Their 11 wins were the most victories in a season in school history. Sherry turned around another losing program as head women’s soccer coach at Graceland University. Prior to his arrival, the Yellowjackets never had a winning season in its history. That changed as well. He coached Graceland to records of 12-7-1 and 16-2-3 before he led the team to an 18-0-5 record in his final season. Their success equated to the school’s first undefeated season, the school’s first-ever Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Championship, an appearance in the NAIA Final Four and its highest national ranking of seventh by the NSCAA. For Sherry’s efforts, he was named HAAC Coach of the Year, NSCAA Central Region NAIA Women’s Coach of the Year and Region V Coach of the Year. While being head coach at Graceland, Sherry also served as head coach of the Des Moines Menace U-15 Boys Super Y League and worked with the Iowa Olympic Development program. Nagoya junior youth head coach in Japan prior to his four-year stint at Graceland. He also worked as the director of soccer coaching and player youth development for the Al Nahda national schools organization in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 1992-93. Most recently, he served as the lead assistant coach for the Guyana Women’s National Team “The Lady Jaguars” as part of the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship qualification. Sherry got his first-ever head coaching job at Burlington Danes High School in London in 1987. During his five years at the institution, the school won the West London Area Cup at every age level and also won the prestigious London Championship two straight years. One of his former players, Danny Dichio, formerly played for the MLS club Toronto FC from 2007-09. Sherry also headed the West London Schools F.A. select teams from 1989-92. He served as the head coach for the U-16 select team from 1991-92 and the U-15 select team from 198990. As a student-athlete, Sherry played for the West London Institute of Higher Education and won the British National College Championship in 1987. He was selected to play for the FISEC Great Britain U-18 team and went on to play for Bangor City in the United Kingdom and Morning Star in Hong Kong. Sherry earned degrees in physical education/sports science and sociology from Bangor University in Wales, along with his master’s from Leicester University in England. CONFERENCE USA 2019-20 Conference USA continues to compete and promote the success of its student-athletes. The league has adapted to the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics in its 25-year history, but the commitment to excellence, integrity, leadership and its student athletes in competition, academics and community is unwavering. Conference USA enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU. Success is not limited to athletic achievement as more than 237 Conference USA student-athletes have garnered Academic All-America honors, and more than 794 have achieved academic all-district laurels and thousands of student-athletes have earned a college degree. Conference USA sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball). The league promotes the scholar-athlete ideal, honoring outstanding academic achievement with numerous conference-sponsored awards, including the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Commissioner’s Academic Medal as well as sportspecific All-Academic teams.

C-USA annually awards postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Awards, ScholarAthletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Additionally, Conference USA presents a Spirit of Service Award three times each year, recognizing student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and give back to the community through significant service efforts and participation. The conference’s footprint is concentrated with 14 members in 10 states and a combined area population of more than 30 million. With a commitment to community involvement, the conference developed several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations. BIO, Dr. Leslie K. Guice Became 14th president of Louisiana Tech University, July 1, 2013

DR. LES

GUICE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT @LKGuice

On Nov. 22, 1975, Les Guice, the future president of Louisiana Tech University but at the time a Tech junior architecture major, put a metaphorical but very visible exclamation point on two of his life’s biggest loves. First, he married to Kathy May, now his wife of 43 years, in south Arkansas. Second, the very newly newlyweds immediately headed to Ruston to watch Louisiana Tech’s football team play Arkansas State. In the cold and rain. Tech lost. Les and Kathy didn’t. Several diplomas, three sons and three grandchildren later, they are still going strong and leading their alma mater to new heights. Dr. Guice and Tech share a rich history together that spans five decades and has produced family ties that are deeply rooted in a passion for the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. From an architecture student stepping on the campus for the first time in 1972 to an appointment as Louisiana Tech’s 14th President in 2013, Guice has shown an unwavering commitment to leadership and service to his alma mater. One of Guice’s first achievements at Tech was earning a bachelor of arts in architecture in 1976. Discovering a passion for engineering under the mentorship of professor Jack Painter, Guice went on to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering from Tech in 1978 and decided to pursue teaching and education as his profession. His dedication to his students, his faculty and the University would lead to his appointment as dean of Tech’s College of Engineering and Science (COES) in 1999. As Dean, Guice continued to encourage and support innovations in the curricula. The College’s faculty became increasingly successful in securing external funding for the integrated curriculum which resulted in a transformative redesign of curricula throughout the College. Guice’s leadership and vision also reinvigorated the Engineering and Science Foundation to more effectively serve the needs of the College. He initiated a new integrated strategic plan, known as “COES 2010,” and capital campaign, “Tech’s BEST,” that led to funding for an Eminent Scholar Chair, 15 Professorships, a $500k Scholarship Fund, and several new laboratories and facilities. With a focus on the future and a progressive vision for economic development, Guice has led the planning and development of the Louisiana Tech Enterprise Campus, a research park connecting the University and downtown Ruston. Enterprise Campus’ first building, Tech Pointe, was completed in 2012 and is now home for several companies and organizations; another building to house emerging companies is already needed. Because of a revitalized relationship between the City of Ruston and the University, and thanks to the Ruston citizens and friends and supporters of Tech, the partnership has resulted in about $300 million in investments, private and public, during the past two years. Much of that growth is due to Tech’s problem-solving, opportunity-seizing president. As president, Guice is the chief executive officer of north Louisiana’s only Carnegie Foundation national research university and one of only two public universities from Louisiana recognized in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News and World Report. Throughout his career, Guice has contributed to and played a central role in creating the culture and vision for the future of Tech; he continues that commitment as president. His focus on campus-wide engagement and building and growing relationships, plus his leadership in forging a path toward advancement of the University’s academic and athletic programs, research and commercialization activities, and economic development efforts means that Louisiana Tech University’s best days are yet to come.

TOMMY

McCLELLAND DIRECTOR of ATHLETICS @TMcClelland

Since stepping on campus in July of 2013, the cornerstone of Louisiana Tech Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland’s leadership has been the philosophy of building champions on the playing fields, in the classrooms and in life. While leading Louisiana Tech into the Conference USA era, McClelland impacts the athletics department through fundraising, facility improvements, coaching hires and overall student-athlete development. If the past five years are an indication, McClelland’s philosophy is paying dividends in Ruston. In fact one could argue that since his arrival in Ruston, Louisiana Tech has seen its most impressive five-year run since the 1970s. Over the past five years, the University has seen postseason appearances by football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, golf and track and field. During his time in Ruston, the Louisiana Tech programs have all taken strides forward on the playing fields, highlighted by: Football – the Bulldogs are one of just four teams nationally that have won a bowl game in each of the past four years, joining Clemson, Wisconsin and Utah. Since 2013, Tech has had more players selected in the NFL Draft than any other Conference USA program. Men’s Basketball – the Bulldogs were one of just 13 teams in the nation to record 23-plus wins five straight years (Tech won 17 this past year). Tech won a pair of regular season conference titles during this stretch. Women’s Basketball – Head coach Brooke Stoehr (a former Lady Techster great) led the program to back-to-back Women’s National Invitation Tournament appearances and top four finishes in the C-USA regular season. Baseball – Louisiana Tech has won 35-plus games for three straight seasons, the longest such streak since the 1980s while making its first NCAA Regional appearance in 30 years when the Bulldogs won 40-plus games and reached the Starkville Regional finals in 2016. Softball – the Lady Techsters have recorded four straight 30-plus win seasons for the first time in two decades. Tech won its first Conference USA Tournament title in 2017, earning a spot in the 2017 NCAA Tournament in the Tuscaloosa Regional where it took No. 1 ranked Minnesota to extra innings before falling. Men’s Golf – the 2016 Bulldog golf team shocked everyone in route to capturing the Conference USA team title (its first since 1980) and clinching the program’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Victor Lange became the first Bulldog to ever earn three straight strips to the NCAA Regionals. Louisiana Tech was one of only seven FBS schools in the country to have 9-plus football wins, 20-plus MBB wins, 35-plus baseball wins and 35-plus softball wins (one of only two non-Power 5 teams to accomplish it: BYU) during the 2016-17 campaign. That same season Tech also became only the second C-USA program to finish in the top 5 in football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, baseball, softball and soccer in the same season in league’s history (East Carolina, 2012-13). 2015-16 also saw some impressive achievements. Louisiana Tech joined Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Ole Miss as the only five Football Bowl Subdivision schools to recorded 9-plus wins in football, 20-plus wins in men’s basketball and 40-plus wins in baseball. It was also one of only 12 FBS programs to play in the postseason in each of those three sports, joining Florida, Connecticut, Florida State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Washington, Duke, Arizona, Utah and Miami (Fla.). Pretty elite company. Off the field, Louisiana Tech student-athletes have blossomed in the classroom as well. During McClelland’s time in Ruston, a total of 726 LA Tech studentathletes have been recognized on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll while another 173 have earned the C-USA Academic Medal, including a record 47 in 2017-18. Louisiana Tech senior soccer star Katie Sloan was named the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year for Division I Women’s Soccer, becoming the first student-athlete in LA Tech history to receive this

prestigious honor. The University has also seen its athletic programs continue to earn high marks in both the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Report (APR) and Graduation Success Rate, ranking among the state and conference leaders in many of these marks. Perhaps the most tangible sign of McClelland’s impact at Louisiana Tech are in facilities with the addition of the $23-plus million Davison Athletics Complex and the $18-plus million press box and luxury suites at Joe Aillet Stadium. These two new facilities not only changed the landscape of football game-day in Ruston but also produce more than $1.2 million in additional revenue per year for LA Tech Athletics. In addition to the new construction, the department has seen upgrades and renovations to many of its other athletic facilities, such as the addition of the $1.2 million Paul Millsap Vision presented by Community Trust Bank, a high definition video display board in the Thomas Assembly Center. The project also included a customized sound system for the Thomas Assembly Center and a video board control room, utilized for both football and basketball. Louisiana Tech Athletics has also seen record numbers in private giving in each of the last four years, including surpassing $1.6 million in giving to the Louisiana Tech Athletics Club (LTAC) for the first time ever this past year. Tech has also seen record numbers in most LTAC donors in the past three years. During the 2013-14 fiscal year, McClelland spearheaded the efforts in raising more than $10.8 million through both LTAC and Quest for Excellence; more than double any previous year in Tech Athletics history. Included in the record total were five, seven-figure gifts. Louisiana Tech also made the announcement in the fall of 2015 that it partnered with Adidas America, Inc. to establish a transformational 5-year exclusive agreement that outfits all 16 NCAA men’s and women’s programs in Adidas uniforms, apparel, footwear and equipment through the 20202021 athletics season. During his time in Ruston, McClelland has also groomed a pair of newly named athletic directors in Lamar AD Marco Born and Florida Atlantic AD Brian White. Both Born and White served on McClelland’s senior staff during their time in Ruston. Prior to coming to Ruston, McClelland made a national name for himself after quickly elevating to the athletics director position at age 26. He earned high praise from a number of high-profile experienced athletic administrators. “Tommy McClelland is an outstanding leader and one of the nation’s rising stars in intercollegiate athletics,” said Bubba Cunningham, athletics director at the University of North Carolina. “He has a demonstrated commitment to supporting and developing his coaches and studentathletes and has already become well-known among ADs for his leadership, vision and character. Tommy has also shown a dedication to lifelong learning and the application of his skills and talents to making his athletic programs better.” Prior to being named athletic director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008, McClelland served as interim athletic director and assistant athletic director of internal affairs at the university.

In his time at McNeese, McClelland and his staff had numerous success stories when it came to increased revenue streams and the overall game-day experience in Lake Charles. He raised more than $3 million in private donations, and he was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships to nearly $1 million, while securing new clients and multiyear sponsorships. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales: the program eclipsed the 8,000 mark in 2008 with a high of 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single-game attendance records in baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, women’s basketball and women’s tennis. “Tommy is a rising star in the college athletics administration field and, in my view, the ideal leader to advance Louisiana Tech’s athletics program as it transitions into Conference USA,” said Liberty Athletics Director Ian McCaw. “He possesses impeccable integrity and has an extraordinary work ethic. Moreover, his interpersonal and relational skills are outstanding and will enable him to quickly connect with Bulldog fans as well as campus and community leaders.” One of McClelland’s main goals was to improve the life of the studentathletes and increase the game-day experience for the McNeese State fan base. One of the most effective ways to accomplish these goals was by improving the facilities. During his time at McNeese State, he oversaw a combined total of over $11 million dollars in facility renovation and new construction. The combination of increased revenue streams, renovations and new construction, and a highly-involved fan base led to plenty of success stories on the playing fields. During his tenure as athletic director, McNeese won Southland Conference championships in football (2007, 2009), soccer (2006, tournament; 2007, regular season), softball (2010, tournament; 2013, regular season), men’s basketball (2011, regular season), women’s basketball (2011, regular season; 2011 and 2012 tournament) and men’s cross country (2012). The women’s basketball program made its first appearances ever in the NCAA Tournament, and the men’s basketball program hosted the first

round of the NIT postseason tournament (Boston College live on ESPNU). Even more impressive is the fact that while the Cowboy and Cowgirl programs were capturing titles on the fields, the University’s studentathletes were making tremendous strides in the classroom. In five of McClelland’s six years as athletics director, McNeese State led the Southland Conference in the number of student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition, McClelland guided the resurgence in APR success in Lake Charles. The number of athletic programs boasting the required APR score of 925 went from four in his first year to all 16 in his final year. The community service hours performed by the MSU student-athletes also tripled to more than 3,000 during his tenure. “Tommy has a great knowledge of college athletics and excels at helping his student-athletes balance and succeed in their commitments to academics and athletics,” said Michigan Athletics Director Warde Manuel. “Tommy has also proven his ability to work effectively with coaches and administrators to help his programs be successful.” McClelland earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State in 2004 and completed his master’s degree in sports administration in 2005. He walked on with the Demons football team and eventually earned a scholarship; he also competed in the javelin for the NSU track and field team. The native of Basile, Louisiana served as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in athletics and also worked at the Southland Conference office as an administrative intern, assisting with championship events. McClelland is also a 2012 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. McClelland is married to the former Jessica Stokes of Garrison, Texas. They have two sons, Lawson (8) and Grayson (7).
