Pseudocydonia sinensis

Pseudocydonia sinensis

False Chinese Quince

The Chinese Quince besides making excellent jam and jellies is a beautiful ornamental tree with an attractive dense rounded shape. Growing from 3 to 6 metres tall and 2 to 4 metres wide depending on soil fertility and soil moisture. The 4cm cup shaped deep pink flowers, reminding one of apple blossom, are followed by huge oval, fragrant quinces which ripen in autumn. The fruits make excellent jam and jelly. “Flaky sycamore-like bark exfoliates into an attractive patchwork of gray, green and brown on the fluted mature trunks of this tree.” During autumn the shiny dark green leaves turn intense shades of red and orange. Whilst tolerant of drought when once established the Chinese Quince does better if given some extra irrigation during dry periods.
