The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Oganga, The Giver and Taker of Life

1999

In the eleventh film in the series, in December 1916, Indy, still stationed in Africa, is promoted to Captain and then ordered to cross the jungle with Remy and Captain Boucher to pick up a shipment of weaponry. Along the way, Ubangan Sergeant Barthélèmy picks up the sole surviving child from a disease-ravaged village despite Boucher's orders against it. On the way back, Indy and company succumb to disease themselves, and are picked up by Albert Schweitzer and the orderlies from his jungle hospital. At first resistant to being treated by a German, Indy soon begins to realize that Schweitzer is not interested in war, only attempting to cure people against all odds.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Countdown: "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Oganga, The Giver and Taker of Life"
More like "Indiana Jones and the Abhorrence of Bureaucrats" (not complaining).
But genuinely though, a very somber and poignant episode, this one is. A thoughtful and quite potent dive into the immorality of war and the things those in high places will do for more power, no matter what the cost of life may be.
Lacking in the fun, but more than makes up for it in its wonderful writing and deep, nuanced maturity in the tackling of a subject such as this.

Indy im Kampf gegen die Gefahren des Dschungels, womit die Folge mehr an seine eigene Version eines "Aguirre" erinnert.
Nach der Beförderung zum Captain soll Indy und seine Einheit durch den Dschungel um eine Ladung Waffen entgegen zu nehmen. Dabei trotzt die Einheit den Gezeiten und Krankheiten, bis man mit letzten Kräften ein Dorf erreicht, indem man auf Albert Schweitzer trifft. Der möchte nichts vom Krieg wissen und verfolgt ganz andere Interessen.
Fern ab von den extrem Actionlastigen Folgen widmet man sich hier eher der Natur und den einheimischen Afrikas. Zudem werden Indys Absichten für den Krieg auf den Kopf gestellt, was doch eine interessante Sichtweisenänderung darstellt.
Casttechnisch sieht es diesmal bis auf Friedrich von Thun etwas mager aus und auf ganz große Namen verzichtet man.
Dafür sind die Naturaufnahmen mitnichten das beste, an der Folge und optisch wirklich der Wahnsinn.
Macht trotz Actionarmut viel mit seiner Atmosphäre und den interessanten Dialogen weg und weiß durchgehend zu unterhalten.

the end credits song in this one is Bach's "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," which is a very traditional wedding song in America and hilariously does not at all tonally match the death and brutal nihilism of this disease ridden episode.

Up until now, Indiana Jones, or Lieutenant Henri Defense as he is still known to his men, was a believer in the righteousness of the war. The gruesome events he witnessed and participated in at the Somme and in Verdun certainly made him contemplate its purpose, but he still bought into the necessity of the conflict on some level, mass casualties notwithstanding. Seeing as the last couple of movies aren't on here, this is some recap bullet points for Deception & Demons and The Phantom Train. These last two had some of the most Indiana Jonesey stuff so far.
* Indy met "Belloq" again, this time with a ragtag group of old guys, they went on an adventure to blow up a train... They blew it up
* Indy was an important bike messenger and disobeyed orders so loads of guys didn't die in the trenches
* Indy met Emperor Palpatine at a party, he introduced him to the dirty spy Mata Hari, they had sexytimes, and Indy got jealous of her other lovers like a whiny child.

Well we're back to Young Indiana Jones! As school ramps up and my desperation to keep my consecutive movie per day streak going follows suit these are perfect to just throw on and bust out! Compared to the last one this was more of a philosophical slow burn and Indy as his fat friend travel across the Congo in a fairly decent depiction of how shitty the jungle is! The Belgian Major the foil to Indy was actually a pretty solid actor and the boys face a number of moral dilemmas! Also some parts go stupid hard for absolutely no reason! Like I honestly don't understand these movies, the strangest blend of jokes but also seriousness with a bit of good filmmaking every once in awhile!

Man, this one was pretty real.
Last flick, Indy learns that top priority of a soldier is orders, then survival from the German dude. He also learns to be adaptable - make things up as they go. This one starts with Indy doing more of the latter. He's rewarded for it, but also told that he needs discipline. So he spends the rest of the story kind of wrestling with these two ideas. All the while he's learning about the fact that all these white dudes aren't fighting for Africans, but for land in Africa. Quite a heavy story really. Hammering home the grayness of conflict

Engaging, compelling feature in The Young Indiana Jones series , the film boasts yet another interesting, entertaining story line with plenty of good action and thrills. There's some good elements here and there and as a whole,, it is a satisfying feature that keeps things interesting and entertaining. A better film than the previous film, I felt that the writing in the entry was better and that there was much more to the story that was appealing.
I'm not saying the previous film was bad, on the contrary, it was good, but it simply didn't stand out as others in the series. Here, we have a better fleshed out film that keeps you invested from start, relies on a good script and boasts some good acting and effective pacing, which makes this a worthwhile Young Indiana Jones film. I really enjoyed this entry and it had everything that would come to expect from a fun, entertaining Young Indiana Jones film.
