It was fun while it lasted. I would give it 5 stars for it's legacy alone, but not for the roaches. Opie and Anthony described this place well.
Rest in Peace OG Hotel CarterHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 17, 2010
This is the shiestiest hotel I've ever stayed in.
Cheap room rates in Times Square are always a plus, but beyond the huge "Hotel Carter" sign outside and tacky lobby, the Carter has a surprising horror movie vibe: dim lighting, rank smell, broken furniture, and random stains. Beds are serviceable but be sure you've got all your shots; I didn't catch anything during my visit, but your luck will vary.
Whatever profit this hotel makes beyond their rent obviously isn't being reinvested into it. But who cares when you're saving oodles, right? Right?Helpful 26Thanks 0Love this 23Oh no 0 - Carla H.National City, CA152512Dec 30, 2014
Stayed here for 12 nights. It's in a great location & you can't beat the price. There is security & doormen so that's a plus. My room wasn't one of the renovated ones but it was large and had: huge closet, flat screen tv, and a dresser.
The shower is 2/5 stars, I wear shower shoes and sometimes there isn't hot water. There is a heater but it doesn't work. I was given the option to move rooms or get extra blankets. I took the extra blankets.
The maids come every other day and are very helpful and nice. As a matter of fact all of the staff is nice. This hotel is not fancy or romantic, but if you plan on spending most of your time out on the town I recommend it. The ball is dropping 1 block from here & I'll be there so I'm a happy camper!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ms B.Kissimmee, FL478332Dec 24, 2014
I stayed here with a group of friends a while back. To date, this is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. I went back a few days ago and from the lobby it looks like not much has changed. What's funny is there is a wiki page on the hotel. Our room had no towels, washcloths, or soap. Found that strange from a hotel. Not the cleanest or safest hotel. There's a topless bar right in the lobby so if you're into that kind of thing, go ahead and book. If not RUN!!

The pictures are glamorous compared to the reality.
Starting with the good; check-in was fast and the front desk staff is very nice. The security officer in the lobby checking keys seemed overwhelmed with the traffic in and out of this joint.
Theater district/Times Sq location: good.
Moving on...
The rooms were so hot- steaming heat from the original radiator systems, we had to have a window fully open our entire stay... in November. The noise from the street, subsequently kept our entire party up (awake) for most of the night.
Vents on original doors(see pics) allowed for clear loud hall noise.
Easily the sketchiest place I have ever stayed.
Sketch=worst.
Ceiling lights only. No lamps.
So...fully lit, or completely dark. WTF?
When we arrived, used soap and a full trashcan in the bathroom greeted us. The only trashcan in the room.
Beds were hard, like cement with a hospital sheet thrown over it.
I shouldn't mention the man masturbating in his window across the street because it is not the hotels fault that some derelict was tugging his junk in another building adjacent to the hotel, BUT, location location location, and had the room not been so goddamned hot and I wasn't living with an open window, it is likely I never would have seen that fool.
We will all need chiropractors and therapy after this visit.
Breakfast/convenience store attached to front area where you can get to-go breakfast, and water for about 4.50 a bottle....not a gallon...a bottle.
Limited seating.
Gentleman's club (Cheetahs) right next door- not sure if that's a pro or con, but the man covered in blood out front while we were there would lead me to believe its a con.
Oh...wifi...the paid wifi through a third party is only available on certain floors. Another WTF?
We did leave a day early and our last night's stay was refunded promptly. One for the Hotel Carter!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 21Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2011
After the reviews I read, I wanted to shoot myself for booking a hotel here.
BUT DESPITE THE REVIEWS BELOW, IT WAS OK! SEE MY PICTURES!
I took the advice of others below and here is a compiled list of things you need to know to make this a good experience:
(I realize some people travel from afar and cant pack all the things I mention, but do so if you can)
1.) Realize these prices are dirt cheap for one block off of times square, sooo convenient
2.) Realize this is saving you money and you can endure it-you wont die and can spend that money elsewhere
3.) Bring your own blanket and flat sheet if you are a germaphobe like me- it gets chilly with what they provide and you'll just be more comfy
4.) Bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste- not provided (cheap soap and shampoo are) and also the towels are thin and I brought my own which worked out fine
5.) ASK FOR AN UPGRADED ROOM (I did this and see my pics, it was fine), this costed only extra $25 a day off the original quoted $100 price
6.) No bed bugs, oh and I checked and checked
7.) Old lobby and elevator, but not the worst Ive seen and ran smoothly
8.) Fairly helpful staff and help, no problems with them
9.) Held bags after checkout all day for $2
10.) Working AC in the middle of August and tourist season
11.) paid wifi, so try to do most of your research before you get there if you want to save money ($10 a day), or use your smartphone
Overall, a fine experience. Not the best and certainly not the worst, but I left happy, in good health, and with all my belongings. I spent the extra money seeing more broadway shows. Give Hotel Carter a chance if you are on a budget, I promise it is not worse than your old freshman dorm. If you have a lot of dough, find elsewhere to stay with more amenities.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - John S.Hellertown, PA1152410Feb 19, 2013
My wife and I have stayed at the Hotel Carter several times over the years, never having a problem and just booked another weekend stay for this summer. My last visit was in May 2011 from which I included some pictures.
Do NOT believe all the doom and gloom some people post about this hotel. Is the decor and furnishings old and rundown in most rooms? Sure, but the Hotel Carter is clean, safe, and inexpensive with a great location.
When you're in NYC you shouldn't be hanging around in a hotel room. You should be out enjoying the restaurants, theaters, bars, entertainment and all the other sites that this great city has to offer. I am only in my room to sleep and by staying at the Carter I have an extra 1-2 hundred dollars in my pocket each day to spend actually enjoying the city. Can't beat that.
This is a budget hotel located half a block from Times Square, don't go in expecting an upscale boutique hotel or 5-star services and amenities you won't use anyway. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay in mid-town the Hotel Carter is your placeHelpful 11Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Ryan K.CA, CA642226Dec 7, 2013
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!! Read below.
This place is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! The service is absolutely non existent they did not even clean our rooms 2 of the 4 nights we were. THERE WAS NO HOT WATER THE WHOLE TIME WE WERE THERE. We asked for toilet paper and they made US go downstairs and get it and the worst part is my fiancé woke up with these disgusting half dollar size bug bites on both her arms. IT IS DISGUSTING!
I DONT EVER WRITE REVIEWS BUT I HAD TO YELP THIS PLACE!
We thought it would be fine to stay here because we would only be there to sleep/shower but IT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE AND RUINED OUR TRIP!!!!Helpful 19Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Ryan P.Seattle, WA6129May 25, 2010
If you are broke, seriously broke, stay here. Otherwise start running while you still can.
The location is "good" for first timers going to NY but no matter what, the lack of NO HOT RUNNING WATER negates any freakish benefits offered by this endless winter known as the Hotel Carter.
Key Benefits
- Less than a block off of Time Square
- Black mold
- 5 TV Channels
- No Hot Water
- Bathroom on par with one found in a prison
- Weekly lottery held for room cleaning (I didn't win)
The entrance really threw me off. As soon as you walk in you swear you are standing in a cheap lounge on the outskirts of the Vegas strip.
I didn't see a maid for 3 days, turned out my cell wasn't on her "list" which I found out after I chased her down.
I wouldn't ever suggest it to anyone.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 17Oh no 0 - Apr 17, 2008
I stayed at the Hotel Carter before. All I can say is I am glad that there is a hotel in Times Square for those on a budget.
Yes this hotel is the pits but a necessary evil. Not everyone passing through Manhattan has deep pockets.
My room was the cleanest they could possibly make it. The carpet was old and dingy. The bed swallowed me up because it was so soft and had no support.
Luckily my room didn't have any roaches.
One thing I did like was the water pressure was very strong in both the sink and the shower.
I am glad that everything went smooth in dealing with the staff. I had no problems. The Hotel Carter is for those that don't require much other than a bed and bathroom to use and shower when staying in New York.
I am glad Hotel Carter is there for those who are on a budget. For $85 in Times Square, you can't beat it.
Again I am going to give the unpopular opinion on a New York hotel and give it more stars than it deserves. I am basing it on price compared to others in the area. There are some youth hostels that offer no privacy that go for almost as much as the Hotel Carter so I will give it 4 stars.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
