Regarded as one of the best golden spreaders, Juniperus × pfitzeriana 'Old Gold' (Chinese Juniper) is a compact, evergreen shrub of graceful habit with ascending branches clothed with deep bronze-gold foliage which retains its great color all year round. The soft, thin, scale-like leaves are bright golden yellow color on the tips of the new growth.
Incorporate fertilizer into the soil or spread it around the plant, but avoid directly placing fertilizer into the planting hole. Established junipers will benefit from a complete fertilizer such as 16-4-8 or 12-4-8 applied at a rate of 1/2 lb. per 100 square feet in early spring and again in late summer.
Juniper trees tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, however prefer a well-drained sandy clay or loam. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Juniper in a well-drained site.
Pruning should be done at least once or twice annually to preserve its rounded shape. This evergreen can be shaped tight by regular pruning or left looking shaggy. Personal preference should dictate the pruning style. Do not prune too much of this plant at once, as it will look woody and bare.
Junipers growing in pots appreciate a moist but well-drained soil. Constantly soggy soil can and often will cause root rot or other harmful or deadly plant diseases. Therefore, I suggest using a quality potting soil or potting mix, or a 50/50 combination thereof and a container with a drainage hole(s).
