BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Pays Tribute to Timeless Coupé of Yesteryear

Each year, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este offers fans from around the world an exclusive opportunity to enjoy some of history’s finest vehicles. Not content to simply display a sampling of its extensive classic lineup, though, BMW arrived at the event with an entirely new model: the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage.

As the name indicates, this model pays tribute to the 3.0 CSL, BMW’s revered 1970s Coupé. “CSL” defines the vehicle’s core attributes: “Coupé Sport Leichtbau” (coupé, sport, lightweight). A masterpiece of efficiency and racing-ready performance, the spirit of the classic 3.0 CSL lives on in the new Hommage model.

The lightweight design has been enhanced by swapping out much of the original aluminum material for carbon fiber and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), a modern composite that offers today’s optimum weight-to-strength ratio. CFRP also adds a unique visual element to the 3.0 CSL Hommage that makes it distinct from its predecessor, although the concept retains the iconic Golf Yellow coloring.

The BMW Design Team has spent a great deal of time ensuring that each element of the new model ties into its core design principles. Rear-view cameras help to reduce aerodynamic drag. Air Curtain and Air Breather systems keep the wheel housings properly ventilated. A carbon fiber front splitter brings the front end closer to the road and echoes the “shark nose” design of the original.
