Dendrobium kingianum Species Fragrant

FRAGRANT – Dendrobium kingianum, is one of the most popular of all Dendrobium species. This very hardy, compact Australian Dendrobium species is quite easy to grow and blooms well, especially if given a fairly dry winter rest. Many 1" flowers, long lasting (6-8 weeks), very temperature tolerant, grow well outside. Australian growers normally use 50% shade cloth and those growing Cymbidiums or perhaps species such as Laelia anceps will easily adapt to growing Den. kingianum. You can mount them, or grow them in fine bark, moss (water when they almost dry) or pot them in gravel (if you like to water often). Can grow into nice specimen plants!
Plants vary in height from 6-12″ (15-30 cm), and they are sometimes described as the weeds of the orchid world — strong praise in my book! They grow cool to hot and should be grown outside as long as possible to enjoy the daily temperature fluctuation and get a chill in the fall (down to just 50º is fine, but as low as 40º).  We keep mine quite wet in the summer and fertilize well.  In the winter, we still water, but not as thoroughly nor as often. Grow in bright but indirect light. They will grow and even bloom in low light, but not nearly as well. Plants bloom in late winter, and the flowers smell AMAZING!!! Flower color varies from pink to purple, but the smell is strong and intoxicating whatever the color.
