Rockridge in Bloom: 'Tiny Monster' Geranium
A bit hard to find locally, although similar geraniums are available at some local nurseries. These are blooming on Broadway Terrace.
This is 'Tiny Monster,' a hybrid cranesbill geranium (Geranium sanguineum) that's spilling over the edges of a raised bed alongside Terrace Gifts & Coffee, 5891 Broadway Terrace, Oakland (next to the Village Market, at Clarewood Drive).
It was photographed in its billowy glory this week, but when I first noticed it a couple of months ago, it had been cut back hard by the gardener (husband of the cafe-shop's owner, I believe).
Online gardening enthuasiasts say it grows well up to a foot high in sun or partial shade, sometimes to the point of being invasive. It blooms spring through fall.
I couldn't find it in stock right now at any local nurseries, but a nurseryman at Berkeley Horticultural Nursery said they carry a number of similar ground-cover geraniums. He suggested 'Crystal Rose,' which is similar but shorter, with medium-pink flowers.
