Newark Resident, Family Open Ice Cream Parlor In South Ward

Newark resident Shikhana Muhammad owns and operates Salaam Ice Cream Parlor with her family members.

NEWARK, NJ -- Residents and visitors to Newark’s South Ward will be able to enjoy everything from old-fashioned root beer floats to bean pie at Salaam Ice Cream Parlor -all year - at the recently opened Salaam Ice Cream Parlor at 1024 Bergen Street.

South Ward resident Shikhana Muhammad, who owns and operates Salaam Ice Cream Parlor with her sister Cushanda Muhammad and other family members, said she was tired of having to drive to South Orange to enjoy an ice cream break, and thought the local community would appreciate and support the business.

Based on the many happy customers who visited during Salaam Ice Cream Parlor’s grand opening, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, it appears the store has a bright future.

Ice cream flavors include vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butter almond, rainbow sherbet, cookies and cream, strawberry shortcake and birthday cake. There’s also a long list of toppings and several ways to enjoy your ice cream including cones, cups, shakes, sundaes and waffle bowls.

Fresh baked goods, based on family recipes attributed to Doris Muhammad, Shikhana and Cushanda’s mother, include chocolate, oatmeal and sugar cookies, brownies, chocolate and yellow frosted cakes and cheesecake, in addition to the bean pies and carrot cake with cream cheese icing.

Ronice Bruce, Executive Director of the Bergen-Lyons-Clinton Partnership, known locally as the South Ward SID, welcomed the opening of Salaam Ice Cream Parlor and the continuing revitalization of the Bergen Street business community.

“With all of the new development taking place in the South Ward, there are lots of opportunities for entrepreneurs, small business owners and investors to contribute and be successful,” she added. “A clean and welcoming streetscape and the support of the SID for economic development and quality of life improvements is helping to make the South Ward the community of choice in Newark for people looking to buy a new home or commercial property, to open a business, to access healthcare and worship.”
