Alternaria on Brassica: Alternaria brassicicola

Factsheets for Farmers
Recognize the problem
Small dark dots first develop on leaves and later enlarge into circular spots. Later, dark green fungus cells (spores) grow on the spots. This causes circular rings to appear in the spots. Old leaf spots tear off and when the dry tissue becomes paper like it falls out creating a hole. The leaves dry up during severe attack.
Background
The disease is usually severe under humid hot conditions. The fungus is seed-borne and is mainly spread through water, wind and infected farm tools. The fungus does not survive in the soil. The disease is most common under hot or warm weather.
Management
Non-chemical controlChemical control
•
Planting clean seeds or seedlings is recommended.
•
Avoid overhead irrigation especially during head formation.
•
Farm hygiene should be practised e.g. cleaning farm tools with bleach before using them.
•
Brassica weeds should be controlled to avoid the disease surviving there.
•
Plants should be planted using proper spacing to avoid disease spread.
•
Rotating with non-brassica crops for at least two years can control the disease.
•
Spray with Famoxadone +cymoxanil and copper oxychloride.
When using a pesticide, always wear protective clothing and follow the instructions on the product label, such as dosage, timing of application, and pre-harvest interval.
