Cyclones

Tropical cyclones are frequent in the northern parts of Australia, mostly between November and the end of April. On average, about 10 cyclones develop over Australian waters each year.

Tropical cyclones have the potential to produce destructive winds, torrential rains, storm tides, wild seas and may lead to flooding. They have the potential to inflict significant devastation over large areas.

Knowing how to prepare for cyclones, both physically and psychologically, and how to provide psychosocial support for individuals and communities impacted by cyclones, is important.

Preparing for cyclones

When your home or community is threatened by a cyclone it can be terrifying. People who haven’t experienced it before can underestimate how stressful it can be.

Recovering from cyclones

When a cyclone happens in a community, it can be highly distressing for many people but there is a lot that family, friends, volunteers and community members can do to help those affected.
