Lychnis chalcedonica v. carnea
A favourite of English florists and gardeners, this very beautiful variety of Lychnis chalcedonica (Maltese Cross) is a herbaceous perennial that has long stems of pinky peach coloured flowers that sit tall above its clump of bright green foliage.
A rare heirloom, given old names such as Nonesuch and Mock Sweet William, it is a hardy survivor.
Absolutely wonderful as a cut flower with stems that are 40-45cm in length. We can see why this lovely reliable trouble free and easy to grow perennial was the recipient of the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society and think this is definitely in our top 10 favourites, as you will not find this everywhere, so provides a unique point of interest both in the garden and in your floral work..
This lovely plant is grown for its abundant flowerhead that are about 10cm in diameter. Flowering is over a long period from early to late summer although we have had flowers in winter when it is mild. Maltese cross as it is also known thrives is full sun and will also tolerate partial shade and will perform to its best in moist, fertile but well drained soils.
Given the length of its stems, although they are relatively strong, it may require some support in windy situations. These plants also once established can tolerate some drought. Plants are also low maintenance and highly disease resistant...what more could you want! The perfect choice for a dreamy cottage garden, in pots and in the perennial border even wild gardens and coastal gardens so you can see why this is one of our favourites! Looks wonderful planted in groups and if planting in the border is best positioned in the front to of the mid border.
Attractive to bees, butterflies, moths and other beneficial insects.
Deadhead to encourage repeat flowering and then cut plants to the ground in autumn. Plants can also be divided once they have become established or of course you can gather your own seed.
Plants will self sow if they are happy in their position.
