MACON, Ga. (WGXA) -- All eyes shift next week from the high heat to the tropics. What is now tropical depression 10 is headed through the Gulf of Mexico, into Florida and then into Georgia. As of Saturday evening, the National Hurricane Center has it as a category 1 hurricane in the Gulf before weakening into a tropical storm as it moves into Georgia. So heads up we could get a piece of this storm on Wednesday.

So this will likely become our I storm, Idalia, pronounced ee-dal-ya.

The path of this storm looks to be rolling into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, then into somewhere near the Big Bent region of Florida and through the southeast. t's still a little to early for exact locations. Each line shows a potential path of this storm from part of the GFS or American model. Notice many of the lines do make their way into Middle and southeast Georgia; however, forecast confidence in the exact location is still low as the storm hasn't formed yet. The European model on the other hand is showing more of a southerly path pushing it into southeastern Georgia and northeastern Florida.

Models are showing some good news despite incredibly warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. Most models showing that shear will dampen the strength of this storm keeping it at this time a tropical Storm or low category 1 storm. This could change as the storm fully develops so stay up to date with this forecast.

The timing when this looks to make landfall would be through the middle of next week, Wednesday looks to be the biggest day for the southeast.

We are reaching the peak of hurricane season in the first week of September then still two months of the season left. Keep an eye on this storm as it tracks towards our direction with the SkyWatch Weather Team.
