This evergreen shrub is a commonly known favourite especially in Britain and in milder parts of humid regions of Germany and Benelux. The first specimen was brought from Japan to Europe in 1783, and has been sought after ever since for its unusual shape of foliage and beautiful variegation on some cultivars.

Aucuba japonica 'Rozannie' - Japanese aucuba

Rozannie is an elegant variety of Japanese aucuba. Some might think that it looks too ordinary compared to the other varieties with coloured leaves but the truth is that not every landscape needs a splash of variegated foliage. Rozannie is a compact aucuba shrub with deep green, evergreen leaves that are glossy and large. The plant has both male and female flowers which means that even without a pollinator it produces a heavy crop of super-attractive, glossy, red berries in autumn that usually persist on the plant until spring.

Commonly considered a house plant it is suitable for outdoor cultivation, too. It has to be grown in part shade or deep shade, it does not withstand afternoon sun or winter and early spring sunshine. Provide it with humus-rich, constantly moist but well-drained, preferably acid to neutral soil. Extra watering is advisable in frost-free periods of winter when the ground is not frozen. Hardy to approx. -24°C (USDA zone 6).
