A chance cross between Magnolia kobus and Magnolia stellata Rosea originating at Colonel Messel’s Nymans garden in Sussex.
One of the prettiest and delightful Magnolias it produces abundant dainty white-lilac flowers in spring.
It only makes a small tree so is perfect for a garden and it is reasonably lime tolerant.
As many as 12 to 15 petals adorn a single glorious flower and in the spring the tree is smothered with velvety cased buds waiting to burst.
In my opinion this is the pick of ‘garden’ Magnolias and even the oblivious register this beauty when it is in full swing.
Mature height: 3-7m
Mature spread: 4-6m
