'King George' is an older variety of perennial aster, and one of the best with its prolific, early, long-lasting show of violet-purple daisy flowers that heralds the end of summer and continues well into autumn. It is sufficiently compact not to need supporting, where taller kinds often need twiggy pea-sticks pushed in to keep the stems upright. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, and plants are resistant to the mildew that plagues other aster varieties. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it the Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
