Papillon (also known as Lavandula pedunculata) is a fragrant French lavender that produces delicate mauve flower heads, each topped with upright petals resembling butterfly wings or ears. The narrow greyish leaves are evergreen. It is a very pretty plant and is extremely attractive to pollinating insects.

Insights
For centuries Lavandula has been grown for its sweet aroma, picked just as the flowers come into bloom, they can be dried and used to flavour baking or sewn into muslin bags to scent clothes and the linen cupboard. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Care
Plant in spring in well drained soil, with full sun. Cut back after flowering to prevent woody stems but avoid cutting into old wood.
