Meconopsis horridula

Prickly Blue Poppy, Himalayan Poppy

Meconopsis horridula
Price: £2.65
This unusual but handsome poppy is from the Himalayas, where it has been recorded growing at altitudes as high as 19,000ft. Presumably its unattractive botanical name refers to the long, narrow leaves and stems which are covered with pale yellow or purple spines, and certainly not to the flowers. These have gorgeous, papery light blue or pale purple petals with contrasting cream stamens. 3ft (1m)

This genus contains some of the most exquisitely beautiful of all flowering plants. Not the easiest of plants to grow, they do best in moderately rich, woodland soil; moist yet with perfect drainage. However, do try them - we guarantee that when you succeed in flowering them, there will be celebrations and the neighbours will be invited in to see for themselves.

Meconopsis horridula

Easier than I thought

Reviewed by Ms AK Caldwell on

I stuck them on a window sill in a food bag and they started to germinate within 2 weeks. I thought it would be harder (stratification and all that). I hope they like my soil. Next year I shall try some of the others.

Germination Instructions

Renowned for being very difficult to germinate. Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of grit or sieved soil. Water from the bottom. Keep in a light place, greenhouse of cold frame, ideal temp. 15°C. Never allow the surface of the soil to dry out. Germination takes 2 weeks to several months. If germination has not occurred after 8 weeks cold stratify. Move to 4°C. for 6-8 weeks then return to warmth. Repeat process until germination occurs. Once germinated damping off can be a problem. Prick out seedlings when they have 2-3 true leaves. Pot on as needed. Acclimatise and plant out in summer or autumn or the following spring depending on size and climate.

Growing Instructions

Thrives in areas with cool damp summers. Prefers moist well-drained soil enriched with leaf mould in a partially shaded site with wind protection. Never allow the soil to dry out. May benefit from fish, blood and bone fertilising. Plant 10 plants together for maximum impact.

Cultivation Instructions

No pruning required. If the plant is well cared for it should produce seed after flowering. Seed should be collected as they turn brown. Only re-sow the largest seeds. Mulch in spring with a well composted leaf mould and add a slow release fertiliser.
