DescriptionMy father gave these to me for my collection on my last vacation. The story is Steve Vogel was writing a book about war and wanted to use the Willie and Joe characters by Bill Mauldin as a front piece in his book.In exchange for allowing this artwork to appear in the book, Steve offered to provide Bill Mauldin with two Ruger Super Blackhawks. These were to be one each of the Willie and Joe characters engraved on the firearms top strap, for which he contacted my father to do the engraving. However, Steve did not provide my father with the original artwork and the scan lacked the quality required for my dad to trace the originals with details. My dad also remembered Bill signed the names Willie and Joe in a specific way, so he contacted Bill about the project. The primary photo is the artwork Bill provided to my dad, and the additional photo are the final pieces engraved with Willie and Joe... To end the story, Bill later contacted my father after receiving the fireamrs to let him know, and I paraphrase: "If I were able to cut metal, I'd swear these were done by me!" I don't think you could have asked for a higher compliment. A little about Bill: William Henry "Bill" Mauldin (October 29, 1921 – January 22, 2003) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist from the United States. He was most famous for his World War II cartoons depicting American soldiers, as represented by the archetypal characters "Willie and Joe", two weary and bedraggled infantry troopers who stoically endure the difficulties and dangers of duty in the field. These cartoons were broadly published and distributed in the American army abroad and in the United States. A little about Steve: Steve Vogel is a reporter for the national staff of The Washington Post who covers the federal government and frequently writes about the military and veterans. Based overseas from 1989 through 1994 and reporting for the Post and Army Times, he covered the fall of the Berlin Wall and the first Gulf War, and subsequently reported on military operations in Somalia, Rwanda, the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq. Vogel covered the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon and its subsequent reconstruction. He wrote the Military Matters column for the Post, and has also covered politics and law enforcement around the Washington region. Vogel is the author of The Pentagon – A History, published by Random House in 2007, and Through the Perilous Fight, about the British invasion of the Chesapeake in 1814, published in 2013 by Random House. This is quite wonderful. Mauldin really hit his 40s style with the artwork.
