This Is Why Coruscant Seems So Different In ‘Star Wars: Andor’

When watching Star Wars: Andor’s fourth episode, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Coruscant had been given a significant reconstruction from the last time we’d seen it. The architecture of the landscape and design of the buildings looked radically different from other appearances in Star Wars media. So what’s the difference?
The prequel films show an era of Star Wars where the Republic is prospering. This is Coruscant in the light. In the literal light. The design of the buildings and architecture reflects the daylight in a way that amplifies their beauty. And at night, thousands upon thousands of lights sparkling throughout the cityscape to give the effect of a jewel reflecting sun rays.

Andor is set during the reign of the Empire. An Empire that couldn’t be more different from the Republic it once was. The Empire is about control, oppressing those who would stand against them and even those who would willingly side with them. The architecture is altered to amplify light, creating bold, flat colours. That light forces itself to reflect off surfaces to create an imposing space.
This design philosophy brings an Imperial Coruscant in line with other Imperial installations. Comparing the Death Star - one of the most imposing Imperial installations – shows the similarities between the two. The elegance, the grandeur, is still there, but in the time of the Empire, it’s flattened. Coruscant is still the shining beacon of the Empire, the galaxy, which is why the lighter shades of grey remain in place. In a way, it shows most Coruscant citizens’ willingness to follow the Empire’s way.
While only the lighting and the way it’s used has caused such a change in episode four, future episodes should take place within the heart of Imperial operations, showing a greater shift to Coruscant’s design. We’ve already seen such with the Imperial Security Bureau headquarters, but that is a place the films never showed. That design philosophy within the heart of the Senate, however… Let’s just say Coruscant is no longer the place we remember.
