Magot (meaning wad of cash or "nest egg" in French) lies in the space between whimsical and perplexing. It may be a bit unnerving to those who can't get on with an old-world style composition: beware, you might feel a bit stifled. It begins with a certain compactness that is quite attractive to my nose. It's a pastel bergamot leading into a dense lavender absolute and a whole lot of orris, underlined with clove. This results in an unusual merging of aromatics and boudoir-like sensibilities, something that wouldn't be out of place in the Oriza L. Legrand line. Herbaceous and floral, yet also powdery and candlestick waxy, a direct path from the "secret garden" to "flowers in the attic." There are also dried fruit apricot accents, especially as it reaches the heart stage.

Few fragrances feel so elliptical to me, yet give me such satisfaction. It's so hard to pin down in its gallimaufry of elements, yet I want more of it each time I wear it. It is only after some time after it settles that it becomes more direct, growing more musky and violet-ionone-woody, actually somewhat reminiscent of the great early colognes marketed to men from the 40s through the 60s. How unique Magot is, and how it seems to be so misunderstood and regarded as "stuffy." To be fair, if any fragrance is described as "stuffy," my curiosity is immediately piqued, given my own personal taste. Magot is a real pleasure in my book and has become a favorite from Jacques Flori and Etro.

HASSAN-AFSHARIAN

Weird and awful smell. The notes are a mess and it smells like something got old, not like the perfume has gone bad just something old. The smell makes me sick.
Not much of a review, sorry.

Etro Magot is an aromatic, waxy floral on my skin. It smells reminiscent of an unburnt candle, wick and all. Although this is my second wearing of this fragrance, I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

The opening top notes are strangely dusty-smelling and a little surprising. Lavender and clove create a herbal aroma, however, the iris introduces a creamy, powdery texture. Magot is a unique fragrance and a difficult scent to describe.

As an EDT, Magot is relatively short-lived on the skin and doesn't tend to project very strongly. For this reason, I doubt I would ever purchase a bottle. The drydown is super musky on my skin, and for several hours I struggle to smell anything other than musk. I wish the patchouli and vanilla accords were richer as I feel like this composition is missing an element of depth and complexity.

I have sampled only a handful of fragrances from the house of Etro, but from those that I've tried, they have been resinous and quite intoxicating. Magot is the timid and reserved entry to this line, a fragrance best suited to the wallflower in the room.

If you want a dense clove note, try Chanel's Coco EDP. Etro Magot is a subtle clove fragrance that doesn't make a fuss over the note whatsoever. The composition seamlessly transcends between spicy, floral and aromatic genres as if it had not a care in the world.

Thought I would try a perfume favored for its floral notes because I tend to favor scents with musk, spice, wood, cedar...a bit of amber...some tobacco, some smoke, some incense...maybe a wee bit of lavender-smile. I recently bought Etro Etra and loved it, so I thought I would try Etro Magot.

Uhhhh...sadly, this one ended up on eBay. I guess it was worth a try. Bought a near full Tester for a fraction of the unopened bottle price. Unfortunately, this is simply not for me at all...no way. I cannot say I find this fragrance pleasant or unpleasant. Perhaps I am just unfamiliar with floral fragrances. I just could not wrap myself around this potion.

Rose, tuberose, lily, violet, flowery, messy, INTENSE. Intense!! Seemed to last forever! Started to hurt my nose! Asked a few people to take a whiff and those who didn't turn away choking said, "Oooooh...I don't think so!!"

Not a mainstream fragrance by any means (which is a GOOD thing)...not for everyone...not for me :0(

Juliette La Ciel

A spoon of cloves, a bit of iris, no lavender what so ever, all floating on a raft of patchouli in the sea of powdery musk. Seems good for winter, but it gets lost in the cold air; in warm surroundings becomes stuffy.
It is interesting to taste and is even wearable in reasonable quantities, since the sillage and longevity are very good, but can become annoying, yes, as the composition is... well... strangely dull.
It is a real Magot in the perfume world.

noisome

Woof this is NOT like it used to be - even the ad copy has changed, talking about "peaches" and "vanilla" instead of lavender, citrus, and patchouly - the old ad copy talked about this trifecta as being the classic perfume of a courtesan or somesuch. I wish I had gotten an older bottle.

It used to be skanky and unisex, and yes, old-fashioned. But it had some bones and some depth, it was a real Oriental. There was jasmine! And the clove was not just a suggestion.

Now, it's a weakly soapy demi-fougere - and I don't even know...emasculated? Both boring, and annoying. Too much iris to be even connected to the original. After writing most of this, I read NST's article re: the new formula and she says it has "no cojones", of course I agree.

McColl

I have the older version in a green box - bought it on a warm May afternoon in London's Regent Street on our way to an exhibition I was lucky enough to be included in.
The perfume was to mark the day and remember it. I bought a white silk scarf the same afternoon, and wore it right away with my navy jacket & trousers.

I loved the scent immediately, and each time I wear it, am reminded of that special afternoon/early evening.
It's striking, sweet, charming, and warmly aromatic ...probably in that order.
To me, it doesn't seem local to one area when wearing it, as it seems to waft around and envelop the wearer

I assume this page and the reviews are the newer packaging and formulation (if it's been changed in any way).
It would be interesting to hear from anyone that has had both.

1. The typical Etro quality. Smells expensive and natural. Easy to wear. Soothes the senses with a delicate but distinguishable refinement. Well trimmed edges, quiet and persistent.
- High-end citrus, lavender and rose fragrance.
2. The typical Etro shortcomings. I am yet to find an Etro fragrance that is bold, creative and cool. Magot is nice but lacks the wow effect. Stays too close to the skin.
- There is this confusing moment where i feel like i'm wearing two fragrances at the same time.

Walking Unicorn

From what I've read about Magot I believe I have the reformulated version, but that's okay with me since I don't have the original to compare it to. For me this begins with a sharp blast of lavender and bergamot that quickly softens as I get a powdery unveiling of iris, cedar, clove, bergamot and vanilla. What I like about this fragrance is that there is a powdery tartness along with a sweetness that gives an edginess making this perfume uniquely progressive and modern.

shasta

This is so similar to Shalimar edt. While the leather accord rounds out Shalimar, the cedar rounds this out. I would also say that this kinda smells like lemon furniture polish.

ancaan

Aromatherapy in a bottle. While other fragrances may lift you up or boost your personality, this one calms me down like taking a bubble bath with scented candles. It's not a very complex or challenging perfume and this is why I probably love it so much.
Yes, there is lavender and a powdery iris with a hint of cloves and vanilla. Funny, I hate eating anything with cloves, but to this perfume, it adds just the right amount of spiciness. It is more a feminine scent than a masculine one and for me, definitely worthy of a full bottle. Soon my lover, soon....

spidola

Woody, fresh, spicy and complex! It’s not easy to separate notes here and it’s not easy to understand it… It’s the third time I’m testing it and I’m still confused. This scent calms me, but stings at the same time. I guess it’s the combination of lavender and cloves which give this effect. Very interesting creation!

Roge

R.P.C is all I have to say...Robert Piguet Calypso.

I love Calypso and I love Magot. Just like with Calypso, don't dismiss this as another baby powder fragrance. This is more like a ”Hey baby” powder fragrance. You will get compliments. If you're not in the mood for the constant approach of strangers, then I suggest you not to wear this. The conversation is inevitable. I think Magot's opening is waaaay stronger than Calypso's...other than that... Identical.

antfarm

Magot is a retro, refined, elegant perfume.

It smells mostly of powdery feminine things that a lady would have on her vanity, and also a dash like some Chanel Coco EDP. I just need to say again, this is POWDERY. Almost as eye-wateringly powdery as SMN Melograno.

In the background there is some fruit, but it's not agreeing with my chemistry--it is smelling kind of like Peach Schnapps at the moment. I can see how people would appreciate this, but it's not working on my skin.

neptune1121

One of the best soapy, powdery scent I've ever tried. I have it, and I wear it everytime I want to smell fresh, in a soft way, like wearing a baby talc powder.

xabaras

A sharp opening in which I detect Iris, very pleasant and reminiscent of elegant ladies and boudoirs. The heart feels very spicy to me, still very elegant and chic, impossible not to be detected amongst other perfumed elegant ladies if you're wearing Magot, although I don't think it's a fragrance I'd like to wear: it's edgy and I love smoothness. The most pleasant part of this fragrance is the drydown which happens about an hour from the first spray and makes all that spicy "look at me look at me I'm chic and elegant!" statement mellow and pleasant, if slightly aftershavy and masculine. The beginning of this fragrance is very feminine to me, even too much, but the drydown is masculine. An interesting fragrance, without doubt. But I am starting to wonder what I'll do now with my 50ml Magot bottle, as I don't think I'll use this one at all and I don't want my partner to smell like this either...

correbob

In Rome I visited a perfume shop and I asked for something typically Italian... Retro Magot.
Back to work and in the office the men smelt and couldn't tell what it was... no perfume, no after shave.

Loredana0108

It is special and chic, I agree, but it's not my cup of tea.

Sissi

Bright scent of lemons with an earthy
mix of Lavender And Iris and drydown
of orris root vanilla and ceder.

Reminds me of a Georges Seurat painting
A Sunday Afternoon on the island of La
Grand Jatte. it's bright summery
great for a lazy sunday afternoon
or have a picnic in the fields serounded
by dandilions more organic then
Estee Lauder's Pleasures.

melanie

This is unusually calming fragrance that soothes all your senses. Sharp at the beginning perhaps due to its combination of bergamot and iris, later becomes completely soft and tender, still emerges that sharpness, but only for a moment because it is incredibly gentle and very feminine fragrance to me. I don' like the scent of iris, but here, fortunately, runs only through the top; Magot becomes attractive and creamy and really acts as aromatherapy, though no doubt the seriousness of a true perfume.
Beautiful to wear in winter, reminds me of Ivoire de Balmain, but Ivoire is fresher with some fruit, while Magot blends as if the skin was exposed to the sun. Intriguing fragrance and defintely not an everyday perfume.

Mitsouko

I am illimitably charmed Magot. This perfume has resource of nobles notes: hesperid, floral and fruit. Notes of bases are soft and warm, somewhat exotic. I feel delicate breath of Orient. In it is sensitive touch of musk and vanilla. It is possible to feel in them also appetite fragrance apple-pie or bake apple with vanilla sugar and cinnamon. But absolutely there is not smell from kind " edible" Magot not recede great classic Guerlain perfume. They are creative, mastery variation about classics smells. When I it wearn, I am beautiful. They also security me. They are very femine, not unisex. They are wonderful - poetic and royal. Magic Magot!

jeca

This is a very complex scent that is hard to classify. But the one is absolutely clear about this scent - it is very optimistic. Aromatic waves mingles with juicy citrus notes, I smell pleasant sweetness in the middle.
