Having an education in Graphic Design, I can understand from an aesthetic and business-oriented viewpoint why the current logo was favored and approved by Bushnell at the time. Not that I assume this was what he was thinking, but here's my analysis:
The other logos on the upper right there, compared to the final logo, just feel really flat. While they are consistent with the aesthetic expectations of how people perceive technology, they don't quite express the groundbreaking innovation and abroad generosity that the company was trying to accomplish with their gaming systems. That reality being put forth, the final logo seems to communicate that Bushnell's company is meant to deliver things from a higher place. A higher state of knowledge and resources, like God bringing light and hope to Earth.
Theological comparisons aside, I feel that the final logo feels the most dynamic of the others. How it either branches out like tree roots or curves toward you like a waterslide, depending on your point of view.
And even the name "ATARI" sounds more aggressive and edgy than "SYZYGY". Won't you agree?

Never seen the first three before.
That third one looks like an insignia you might see on the side of a spacecraft in a game, so oddly appropriate :) hehe.

Hmm yeah, sort of...
*hurriedly removes red t-shirt!*

To me, I always thought the Atari logo represented the Joystick which wasn't anything I had seen in previous game systems.
