Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' (tea olive, holly osmanthus, holly olive, false holly) is an evergreen shrub with fragrant white flowers in spring with small, slightly spiny, green leaves. Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' has a very compact growth habit.  The first time I saw Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' my impression was that it would be very dwarf and excellent in a trough garden.  A few years later I was at Plant Delights Nursery and saw Tony's 7-8' tall plant - guess I was wrong about the size!  Even when it gets larger, it maintains a very compact appearance and can EASILY be pruned much smaller.  I cut my plants HARD every 2 years (down to 8"-12" stumps) in late winter and Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' quickly recovers to make a 2-3' shrub.  Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' makes a great mass planting, could be used as a slow growing, low hedge, or fine alone.  Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Kaori Hime' has small fragrant, white flowers in spring and occasionally a few throughout the growing season.  Fragrance is not as intense as Osmanthus fragrans but will still perfume your garden!
