Prized for its magnificent variegated foliage, Glyceria maxima var. variegata (Variegated Manna Grass) is a vigorous, spreading, perennial grass forming extensive stands of narrowly strap-shaped, cream-striped leaves, often tinged with pink at the base. In summer, each erect to ascending culm terminates in open panicles of purplish-green spikelets. This cool-season grass relishes wet soils and can be planted along streams and ponds, and in water gardens. Manna Grass spreads by rhizomes and has the potential to become very aggressive and difficult to remove. Evergreen in frost-free climates.

  • Grows up to 24-36 in. tall (60-90 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in consistently moist, fertile soil or in water up to 6 in. deep (15 cm).
  • A good choice for plantings in water gardens, rain gardens, or near ponds and streams.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Leaves can be cut back when they die off in late autumn.
  • Divide every few years to prevent congestion. Propagate by division in spring.
  • Glyceria maxima is native to the north temperate zone of Europe and Asia. This aquatic, perennial grass is an invasive species in New Zealand, Australia and North America. In the USA, it is listed as prohibited in Massachusetts and potentially invasive in Connecticut.
