Malus x purpurea or the Flowering Crab Apple is a deciduous tree with an open, erect habit and dark green lobed leaves that are tinged with purple when young, as are the stems.
Pretty purple-pink flowers emerge from pinkish-red buds in springtime and are followed by dark red crab apple fruits that look like cherries.
These are excellent ornamental plants for medium to larger gardens, looking their best in lawns or meadow gardens.
