Cornus kousa Satomi, or Kousa Dogwood is an upright, small, deciduous tree.
It has an attractive horizontal branching form. The foliage is oval in shape and pointed, dark green that turns to reds and purples in autumn.
They are grown for their spectacular floral displays in late spring and on into summer. Though these are not actual flowers, but rather more colourful, pink and white, pointed bracts which surround the centre cluster of rather small and insignificant greeny coloured flowers. These bracts will completely cover the upper sides of the branches making an arresting display
The blooms are followed by pinky/red, strawberry like berries which are edible but not that palatable, though birds love them.
Good for medium to larger gardens where you can enjoy the luxury of standing back to enjoy their outstanding beauty.
